Italy enters the defense of its Davis Cup title carrying significant physical burdens across its roster, Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) president Angelo Binaghi acknowledged during a visit to the Olbia Challenger at the Tennis Club Terranova. Seeking a fourth title would be nearly exaggerated, Binaghi noted, though the team intends to compete for the trophy when the Final 8 begins in Bologna.
Physical Toll on Top Italian Players
The second half of the competitive calendar proved particularly difficult for several leading Italian competitors. Sinner, Paolini, Cocciaretto, and Musetti all faced injuries during recent months. Binaghi observed that while the physical strain has mounted, the depth of the national player pool provides ample alternatives for Filippo as he prepares his selections. So che Alcaraz ha detto che gli piacerebbe vincere la Coppa del Mondo, ma a chi non farebbe piacere?
Binaghi remarked, noting that the season will conclude after the Nitto ATP Finals and the Davis Cup, allowing time for recovery and better health in the following year. While observing that Italy has always featured numerous players, Binaghi emphasized that the most significant aspect today is that they play better than before, raising the overall average level.
Davis Cup Selections and Upcoming Fixtures
Filippo will base his final roster decisions on athlete fitness during the remaining tournaments leading up to the Bologna event. The team is scheduled to open its campaign against South Korea. Binaghi pointed out that despite the physical setbacks affecting top-tier competitors, the overall playing standard across Italian tennis has risen significantly, reflecting an elevated baseline of performance rather than reliance on a single standout performer.

Flavio Cobolli Approaches Torino Qualification
In addition to the team competition in Bologna, attention turns to the Nitto ATP Finals in Torino. Flavio Cobolli remains close to securing a singles berth for the season-ending tournament. Binaghi discussed Cobolli following a season highlighted by an extraordinary performance. Should Cobolli qualify, he would become the fourth Italian singles player to compete in the tournament since the event moved to Italy, joining a group that includes Matteo Berrettini, Sinner, and Lorenzo Musetti.
Infrastructure Expansion and Future Events
Beyond the elite national tournaments, the federation continues to develop domestic infrastructure and future event hosting. Binaghi highlighted plans for a new grass-court ATP 250 tournament in northern Italy scheduled to begin in June 2028, alongside the ongoing staging of the Next Gen ATP Finals in Reggio Calabria. During his tour of the Tennis Club Terranova ahead of the Challenger 125 semifinals, Binaghi praised the expansion of the Sardinian facility into a multi-sport complex capable of hosting tennis across multiple surfaces alongside padel and future pickleball courts.
