Italian basketball leadership met in Rome last week to overhaul the organizational structure of the Centro Tecnico Federale, establishing a direct pipeline between youth participation initiatives and national team coaching directives under the Federazione Italiana Pallacanestro.
While the federation’s digital footprint dominated European basketball circles this autumn—securing first place across the continent for social media engagement—internal governance took a sharp turn toward technical restructuring.
Executive Leadership at the Centro Tecnico Federale
Federation president Giovanni Petrucci takes direct charge as the head of the reorganized technical center, anchoring an administration designed to bridge executive oversight with floor-level execution. Maurizio Bertea serves as general secretary, while Margaret Gonnella, who holds the role of vice president at the Federazione Italiana Pallacanestro, steps in as coordinator.
The technical direction of the facility falls to Luca Banchi, who maintains his concurrent duties as head coach of the senior men’s national team.
Technical Commission Translates Federation Policy into Gym Work
Supporting the primary leadership is a specialized technical commission tasked with translating federation policy into daily gym work. Andrea Capobianco joins the commission in a dual capacity as head coach of the senior women’s national team and head of the national coaching academy, known as the CNA. He is joined by Maurizio Cremonini, who oversees the national minibasket sector, and Matteo Panichi, who directs physical preparation for all national squads.
Beyond the core coaching staff, the organization has assembled a multidisciplinary team of experts to address the holistic development of athletes. Dino Seghetti acts as the referee sector representative, while Fabrizio Spataro handles nutritional oversight. Eugenio Crotti directs the federation’s study center, Marco Mordente serves as mental coach, Sandro De Pol manages communication protocols, and Tonia Bonacci provides sports psychology expertise.
Technical Center Targets Grassroots Sustainability and Youth Retention
The technical center’s mandate extends far beyond elite talent identification, focusing heavily on grassroots sustainability and educational values. According to the federation’s operational outline, the center’s core objectives include expanding the overall base of active basketball participants, establishing technical guidelines that highlight the innate athletic traits of Italian players, and supplying rigorous educational content to coaching schools.
Additional priorities target the growing issue of sports dropouts among adolescents, pairing physical training with mandatory education on personal wellbeing, social responsibility, and mutual respect on and off the court.
Upcoming Institutional Benchmarks
The restructuring arrives alongside a busy autumn calendar for Italian basketball governance and national team preparation. The institutional changes complement the recent creation of a general manager role within the federation on October 2, 2026, signaling a broader administrative modernization across Italian basketball.
