Ferdinand Atannon organizes youth camp and joins WBSC Africa as Coordinator

The Baseball in Benin Fall Camp drew approximately 100 young athletes to the Ceg Le Nokoué field for a five-day development program running from September 2 to September 6, La Nation Bénin reported. Organized by promoteur Ferdinand Lavenir Atannon, the camp brought together roughly a dozen coaches and educators to teach hitting, pitching, catching, fielding, base running, and game comprehension.

Atannon recently assumed the role of Regional Baseball Coordinator for West Region 2 within WBSC Africa. In interviews with La Nation Bénin, Atannon outlined the structural goals of the camp, the mechanics of youth development in the region, and the responsibilities tied to his new continental appointment.

Structured Training and Technical Innovations at Ceg Le Nokoué

The 2026 edition moved beyond basic youth introduction by tightening its pedagogical approach. Organizers divided the young athletes into groups to facilitate the work of the coaches and allow more individualized instruction during hitting, pitching, and fielding drills.

Another major adjustment involved integrating experienced players into practical demonstrations. Atannon explained that watching a properly executed physical movement provides a clearer blueprint for young trainees than purely theoretical explanations.

Alongside technical fundamentals, the daily rotations emphasized core values. Coaches built sessions around discipline, respect, teamwork, perseverance, personal responsibility, and self-confidence.

Assessing the Young Athletic Pool in Benin

Evaluations from the September camp revealed encouraging natural aptitudes among participants, though skill levels varied widely.

Atannon observed that the children displayed a strong capacity to learn quickly when placed in a structured environment.

The rapid progress of the participants reinforced the necessity of rigorous oversight, highlighting that raw talent requires permanent institutional scaffolding to yield high-level performance.

Stepping Into Continental Leadership With WBSC Africa

Atannon’s recent appointment as Regional Baseball Coordinator for West Region 2 of WBSC Africa expands his administrative footprint beyond national borders. He described the position to La Nation Bénin as both a high honor and a significant obligation to support regional sports expansion.

His official mandate centers on coordinating cross-border collaboration among countries in the region, identifying localized development needs, and sustaining training pipelines for both players and instructors. Rather than viewing the title as a personal accolade, Atannon framed it as a facilitation role designed to share technical expertise and standard coaching practices across neighboring federations.

Prior to taking on this regional coordination post, Atannon served as the president of the Beninese Baseball and Softball Federation (Fédération béninoise de baseball et softball).

Building a Sustainable Pyramid for Beninese Baseball

Future iterations of the Fall Camp aim to establish a permanent tracking system for high-potential participants.

Ultimately, Atannon’s framework seeks to construct a functional development pyramid reaching from grassroots introductory programs all the way to elite national team representation.
