Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ilie Datcu has died at age 89

Ilie Datcu, the Romanian goalkeeper whose 1969-70 defensive record for Fenerbahçe remains unbroken across Turkish football history, has died at the age of 89.

Fenerbahçe Mourns the Loss of Its Historic Goalkeeper

Fenerbahçe released an official statement confirming the death of the former international, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a figure who secured multiple trophies in the club’s iconic striped jersey. The club’s message read that Datcu’s dedication and championship legacy will never be forgotten by the fan base or the organization.

The goalkeeper made over 200 appearances for the Istanbul club following his arrival from Dinamo Bucharest in 1969. During his five seasons guarding the goal, Datcu established himself as a central pillar of the team before finishing his playing tenure with the club in 1975.

Beyond his playing career, Datcu briefly managed Fenerbahçe as head coach in 1976, later adopted Turkish citizenship under the name İlyas Datça, and subsequently returned to Turkish football to serve as a goalkeeper coach for Beşiktaş between 2002 and 2005.

The Record Set in 1969-70

Datcu’s most enduring legacy in the Süper Lig—then known as the Turkey 1st League—was forged during his debut campaign in the 1969–70 season. The Romanian goalkeeper conceded only six goals across 30 league matches, setting a defensive benchmark as the goalkeeper who conceded the fewest goals in a single season, a record he still holds.

Datcu won three Süper Lig titles with Fenerbahçe during the 1969–70 and 1973–74 campaigns, alongside a Turkish Cup in 1973–74 and a Super Cup in 1972–73. His domestic honors also included a Presidential Cup and a Prime Minister’s Cup.

At the international level, Datcu earned 13 caps representing the Romania national football team prior to his move to Turkey.
