Ettore Messina Urges NBA and EuroLeague to Protect European Basketball’s Soul

Ettore Messina, assistant coach for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and former head coach of Olimpia Milano, stated that any future partnership between the NBA and Euroleague must protect domestic leagues and player health. Messina outlined his vision during an appearance on a discussion series hosted by the European Basketball Advisory Group, addressing ongoing talks regarding a potential cross-Atlantic club competition.

Designing a Sustainable Transatlantic Calendar

Messina emphasized that the central obstacle facing basketball administrators is the creation of a rational, sustainable schedule. With elite players currently navigating demanding domestic and continental fixtures, managing workloads remains paramount.

“The real problem is making the calendar sustainable and reasonable,” Messina said during the advisory group session. “If we manage to reach a better agreement and organize the various competitions more effectively, we will be able to define a number of matches and a more logical distribution of them.”

Preserving European Basketball Identity and Domestic Access

Addressing the structure of a proposed joint competition, Messina cautioned against creating a closed circuit modeled strictly on North American franchise systems. He argued that any unified framework must maintain pathways for clubs from domestic leagues.

“If I could design the system, I would imagine a major competition that also respects national championships, providing some access possibilities for teams coming from these championships, so as not to create a completely closed system,” Messina stated.

The veteran coach also stressed the necessity of safeguarding international windows for national teams, noting the deep connection fans maintain with their country’s squads, alongside the core objective of protecting athlete well-being.

Convergence Toward a Common League

Reflecting on his extensive experience across both European powerhouses—including stints with Virtus Bologna, Benetton Treviso, CSKA Moscow, and Real Madrid—and the NBA, Messina expressed hope for a unified future.

“If the NBA and the Euroleague eventually manage to reach an agreement, one of the most important aspects will be preserving the soul of the competition that we have in Europe,” Messina said. “I hope that the Euroleague and the NBA can find a way to converge towards a single common league.”
