Esquerra Republicana executive leaders have selected Mireia Ingla, Jordi Albert, and Laura Pelay to occupy the second, third, and fourth spots on the party’s electoral list for the Barcelona constituency, running alongside congressional leader Gabriel Rufián in the upcoming Spanish general election, ara.cat reported.
Isaac Albert Defends Territorial Roots Amid Executive Strategy
Party spokesperson Isaac Albert defended the electoral lineup in a statement issued on Wednesday. He asserted that historically rooted national candidates remain the strongest political vehicle to counter the rise of Spanish neo-Fascism.
“Time proves us right: national candidacies rooted in the territory are the ones with the most strength to stop Spanish neo-Fascism,” Isaac Albert stated in the party release.
The candidate unveiling coincides with ongoing friction between Rufián and the wider Republican leadership. While party president Oriol Junqueras continues to reject a statewide leftist coalition akin to the Broad Front led by Ada Colau, Rufián insists he is still pursuing negotiations to form one. Nonetheless, ERC has formally agreed with Podemos to incorporate members from the purple party onto its ballot.
Junqueras Loyalists Fill Key Barcelona Spots
The three officials chosen by the party executive maintain close ties to Oriol Junqueras. Mireia Ingla of Sant Cugat del Vallès, backed the former regional vice president during the recent internal ERC primaries. She also authored the internal investigation report regarding the controversial Alzheimer’s poster campaign targeting the Maragall family.
Jordi Albert served as the primary backup candidate for party leadership if Rufián ultimately declined the nomination. He has worked as an opposition councilman on the Sant Andreu de la Barca city council and operates as the deputy spokesperson for the ERC parliamentary group in Catalonia.
Laura Pelay rounds out the top four positions.
Departures Reshape the Congressional Delegation
The finalized Barcelona lineup marks a substantial turnover for the party’s representation in the Spanish Congress. Lawmakers Jordi Salvador and Pilar Vallugera, who experienced strained working relationships with Rufián, announced they would not seek reelection.
Meanwhile, Francesc Marc-Álvaro is departing the Congress in Madrid to assume the role of ERC leader in the Spanish Senate. Across other Catalan constituencies, lawmaker Inés Granollers will return as the head of the list in Lleida, former deputy Norma Pujol will lead in Tarragona, and deputies Teresa Jordà and Etna Estrems will compete in primary elections to determine the Girona leadership.
