Energie Cottbus is weighing a potential move to bring back defender Leon Guwara as the club looks to shore up a leaky backline following its promotion to the 2. Liga. The 29-year-old left-back is currently without a club after his contract expired at the end of last season, during which he made 20 appearances across all competitions and contributed two assists for the Lausitzer side.
Defensive Vulnerabilities Spur Roster Evaluation
Energie Cottbus has enjoyed a strong start to the 2. Liga campaign, sitting seventh in the standings with eight points through their opening six matches. While the team has drawn praise for playing entertaining and occasionally spectacular football, head coach and sporting director Claus-Dieter Wollitz has also had to manage a defense that has proven porous in the early weeks of the season.
Despite the summer transfer window closing, Wollitz and club officials are in ongoing discussions regarding potential additions to the squad. The team’s management is actively exploring the market for free agents who could step in immediately to stabilize the defensive rotation and alleviate growing personnel concerns.
Leon Guwara Emerges as a Familiar Option
Within that search for reinforcements, Guwara has returned to the club’s radar. The defender departed over the summer when he did not receive a new contract following the team’s promotion. Having spent the previous campaign with Cottbus, Guwara represents a known quantity for Wollitz’s coaching staff, requiring no adjustment period to the club’s tactical demands.
Whether the 29-year-old will officially return to the Lausitz region remains undecided as negotiations and internal evaluations continue. The club views his current free-agent status as an opportunity to address immediate depth issues without paying complicated club-to-club transfer fees.

Prior Pursuit of Toni Leistner Falls Short
Guwara is not the only veteran defender Energie targeted in recent weeks. The club held advanced talks with Toni Leistner regarding a potential transfer to bring the 36-year-old former Hertha BSC captain to Cottbus. Ultimately, that deal did not materialize.
Leistner has instead chosen to wind down his professional career closer to home in the sixth tier with Viktoria Potsdam, leaving Cottbus to focus its attention on other available defensive options as the 2. Liga season progresses.
