Egypt opened its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a scoreless draw against Angola at Cairo International Stadium, failing to break down a resilient visiting defense in the opening fixture of Group B.
Cairo International Stadium Hosts Scoreless Group B Opener
The Pharaohs hosted Angola on opening matchday in Group B of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, playing to a 0-0 stalemate on home turf. Egypt manager fielded a starting lineup featuring Moustafa Shobeir in goal behind a backline of Ahmed Fatouh, Mohamed Hany, Hossam Abdel Meguid, and Ramy Rabia. The midfield trio comprised Mohanad Lasheen, Mahmoud Saber, and Emam Ashour, while the attacking unit featured Haitham Hassan, Moustafa Ziko, and team captain Mohamed Salah. Angola countered with Hugo Marques in goal, defended by Marsoni Sanambua, Kialonda Gaspar, David Carmo, and Jonathan Buatu. Their midfield featured Pedro Bondo, Show (Manuel Cafumana), and Keliano Manuel, with a forward line of Cristovao Mabululu, Zito, and Milson.
First-Half Chances and Disallowed Goal
Angola signaled early intent when Mabululu fired a high shot over Shobeir’s crossbar in the seventh minute. Egypt gradually grew into the match, as Mahmoud Saber sent a 17th-minute strike narrowly wide of the Angolan goal. Moments later, Mohamed Salah tested goalkeeper Marques with a powerful shot in the 20th minute before Egypt had a goal disallowed in the 22nd minute. The visitors continued to pose threats on the counter, forcing Shobeir into a sharp save just before halftime in the 43rd minute. Following two minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew the whistle to send both sides into the locker rooms level at zero.
Second-Half Adjustments Fail to Break Deadlock
The second half resumed with both teams trading early opportunities. Angola’s attack tested Shobeir again in the 51st minute with a shot that drifted wide, followed shortly by a cross that the Egyptian goalkeeper punched clear. Egypt pressed for an opener when Moustafa Ziko headed just wide in the 59th minute, and Emam Ashour sent an effort over the crossbar minutes later. Substitute Omar Marmoush entered the fray, delivering a 63rd-minute cross easily gathered by Marques before firing high in the 67th minute. Despite four minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half, which included a late effort from Hamza Abdel Karim, neither side found a breakthrough as the match ended 0-0.
