Eduardo Emilio Vilarete, one of the most prolific goalscorers in Colombian football history, died on Friday at the age of 73 following a battle with a sarcoma tumor that required the amputation of his left leg in August, his family confirmed through a public statement.
A Career That Produced More Than 200 Goals
Vilarete carved out a status across Colombian and Ecuadorian football during the 1970s and 1980s, registering more than 200 official career goals. Known for his powerful physical presence and sharp opportunism inside the penalty box, the forward spent significant spells with Atlético Bucaramanga—where he played from 1974 to 1978 and returned in 1989—alongside Unión Magdalena, Atlético Nacional, Deportivo Pereira, Deportes Tolima, and Deportivo Quindío. His talents also took him abroad, featuring for Ecuador’s Deportivo Quito, Liga de Quito, and Audaz Octubrino, as well as Deportivo Pacífico in Peru.

Championship Success with Atlético Nacional
The striker reached the peak of his club career with Atlético Nacional, capturing two Colombian league titles in 1976 and 1981. During the 1981 campaign, Vilarete finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 24 goals, cementing his reputation as one of the most feared attacking threats of his era.
Representing the Colombian National Team
On the international stage, Vilarete wore the yellow shirt of the Colombia national team between 1976 and 1985, scoring seven goals in total. His contributions included leading the offensive line during the 1976 Pre-Olympic Tournament, appearing in the 1979 Copa América, and playing in the qualifiers for the 1978 and 1982 FIFA World Cups. He scored Colombia's only goal during the 1978 qualifying campaign against Paraguay.
Vilarete Fights Sarcoma Before His Death
Following his retirement from professional play, Vilarete stayed connected to the sport by working as a scout for Unión Magdalena. Months before his passing, doctors diagnosed him with a sarcoma, a soft-tissue cancer. After an initial surgery to remove the tumor and reconstruct the area with plastic surgery, the cancer returned with greater aggression. To save his life, surgeons performed a second operation in August to amputate his left leg. While he spent his final weeks hospitalized at Clínica Los Nogales in Bogotá—receiving visits from figures including the presidents of the Federación Colombiana de Fútbol and DIMAYOR—his family did not specify the exact cause of his death.
Memorial Services in Ibagué and Santa Marta
In their statement, Vilarete’s children expressed gratitude to the medical and administrative staff at Clínica Los Nogales for their professionalism and care during his hospitalization. Honoring his final wishes, his family announced that his wake and funeral services will take place in Ibagué, where he made his home. Afterward, a special memorial ceremony will be held in his native Santa Marta, allowing supporters of Unión Magdalena to pay their final respects to their historic goalscorer.
