Eastern Quebec Student-Athlete Participation Climbs by 25 Percent

Volleyball Surge Drives 25 Percent Participation Jump

Student sports participation across Eastern Quebec has climbed by 25 percent since the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 1,500 young student-athletes are set to compete in four major weekend sporting events spanning Carleton, Rimouski, Matane, and Dégelis as the late-October schedule hits its peak.

Logistical Hurdles Follow Historic Roster Expansion

Volleyball has recorded a historic high of 127 active teams across the region, fueling the broader participation increase noted by regional organizers. Éric Plourde, regional director of the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ), stated that the numbers have surpassed expectations following pandemic-era attendance drops.

This growth, however, has created distinct logistical hurdles for local athletic departments, particularly regarding access to school gymnasiums. “We are sometimes limited with gym spaces, so we have to be imaginative,” Plourde said regarding the venue constraints.

Four Simultaneous Regional Competitions Test Staff

The weekend lineup features four distinct regional competitions: basketball in Carleton, badminton in Rimouski, volleyball in Matane, and futsal in Dégelis.

Managing travel logistics and tournament coordination places a heavy administrative burden on those responsible for sports inside individual schools. Plourde praised the grassroots efforts of these local staff members, noting that the regional network depends entirely on their daily commitment on the ground. “Without the people in the schools, it would be much more complicated,” Plourde said.

Football Enters Final Stretch Before Playoffs

While indoor sports tournaments ramp up across Eastern Quebec, the high school football season is entering its final stretch before the start of the juvenile division playoffs.

The Guerriers of Rivière-du-Loup Secondary School will play their final home game on Friday evening, hosting the Mistral de Mont-Joli. Meanwhile, the Griffons of Grand-Gaspé prepare to welcome the Sélect de Rimouski for a Saturday afternoon matchup to close out their regular-season schedule.
