Discovering Golf and Baseball at the Wiler Jugend Games

Wiler Jugend Games Offer Multi-Sport Taster Sessions

Children in Wil and Niederbüren tested golf swings and ran the bases during the biannual Wiler Jugend Games, an event designed by regional sports clubs to introduce youngsters to alternative disciplines. wil24.ch reported that the multi-day program, which anchors the final week of autumn school holidays, relies on 19 participating clubs and roughly 100 volunteers to run taster sessions across local facilities.

At the Niederbüren golf facility, golf instructor Stephen Woods coached participants on stance, grip, and swing mechanics. Andrea Bauer, a board member of the local golf club, noted that the organization currently features about 25 active juniors alongside an adult membership spanning ages four to 90, marking the club’s debut participation in the youth games.

Baseball Drills and Diamond Fundamentals at Turnhalle Lindenhof

Activity shifted to a faster pace at Turnhalle Lindenhof in Wil, where the Wil Devils baseball club introduced attendees to hitting, pitching, and base running. Andreas Friedli of the Wil Devils explained the mechanics of the game, including how batters aim for hits to round all four bases for a home run.

Friedli, who discovered baseball in Canada before establishing a Swiss team, pointed out that the Wiler Jugend Games serve as an essential talent pipeline for the club. While the Wil Devils’ senior squad competes in the nationalliga, baseball remains a niche sport in Switzerland, making early youth engagement critical for team recruitment.

Organization, Funding, and Future Schedule

The IG Wiler Sportvereine organizes the event to give youths meaningful leisure activities and clear pathways into club memberships, according to wiler JUGEND games. Financial backing from the Wirtschaft Region Wil, the Raiffeisenbank Wil und Umgebung, the Rolf-Peter Zehnderstiftung, and the City of Wil covers operational costs, while the municipality supplies administrative and venue support.

Organizers have confirmed that the 16th edition of the Wiler Jugend Games will take place from October 12 to 16, 2026, with course confirmations scheduled to be distributed starting September 21, 2026.
