Former RC Lens head coach Dino Toppmöller has broken his silence on his abrupt departure from the French club, revealing that he walked away after management attempted to dismiss his trusted assistant, Nelson Morgado. Toppmöller, who spent only a few weeks in Artois before his tenure came to an unexpected end, detailed the breakdown in relations during an appearance on the German podcast Spielmacher.
Dispute Over Assistant Coach Triggers Departure
The friction behind the scenes culminated just before Lens secured a 2-2 draw against Le Mans. According to Toppmöller, club directors informed him of their intention to part ways with Morgado. The German manager immediately balked at the decision, insisting there was no justification for removing a member of his backroom staff who had committed no wrongdoing.
« I was stunned. For me, it wasn’t sensible to consider parting ways with someone who hadn’t done anything extraordinary, » Toppmöller said on the podcast. Standing firm on his principles, the coach chose solidarity with his colleague over retaining his position. « If I had noticed a serious fault, I obviously couldn’t have tolerated it. But that simply wasn’t the case. For me, it was out of the question to consider parting ways with someone who hadn’t done anything unusual. It was important to me to still be able to look at myself in the mirror today, instead of staying on the sidelines. » Unable to reach an agreement with club leadership, Toppmöller and two of his assistants packed their bags and left.
Club Leadership Cites Cultural and Methodological Divide
The leadership at RC Lens offered a different perspective on the organizational fractures that led to the coaching change. Speaking at an exceptional press conference on September 17, club general manager Benjamin Paroot outlined the internal friction that plagued the technical staff.
« We felt that within the staff, there was on one side a method, a Lens group, French, and on the other a more international staff, » Paroot explained to reporters. « Both have a vocation to work together, to enrich each other, to elevate each other mutually, and where we imagined bridges, walls were created. » The ideological and operational gap between the domestic framework and the incoming international contingent ultimately proved too wide for the club’s administration to sustain.

Fond Memories and Potential Awaiting a New Project
Despite the rapid unraveling of his project in northern France, Toppmöller maintains positive feelings toward the club, its squad, and the fanbase that welcomed him. The short-lived stint left the manager convinced of the roster’s underlying capabilities, even if he was denied the time to see it through.
« The results were good, the atmosphere was good. I immediately clicked with the supporters, » Toppmöller reflected. « It hurts me a bit to leave the club because I saw a lot of potential in the players individually and I had already forged bonds with many of them. » Now back on the market, the German tactician confirmed he is ready to evaluate new opportunities and spearhead a fresh coaching project.
