Dick Lukkien highlights FC Groningen youth talents knocking on door

Ryan Metu Sets the Standard at Euroborg

Eighteen-year-old winger Ryan Metu spent last season primarily as a substitute for the Under-19 side. Now, he stands as the prime example of FC Groningen’s youth academy pathway.

During a recent international break, FC Groningen utilized a dedicated development block known as the “top week” to evaluate high-potential prospects alongside the senior squad. According to VoetbalPrimeur, Metu demonstrated his potential within just two days of training with the senior group.

From Injury Recovery to a Contract Extension Through Mid-2030

That breakthrough performance earned Metu a regular place in the senior setup. He has already made nine appearances for the first team and recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until mid-2030.

After missing the start of the campaign due to an injury sustained during the season opener against FC Utrecht, Metu has returned to full training sessions.

Inside the Top Week Initiative and Youth Integration

Head coach Dick Lukkien has pointed to Metu while highlighting talents currently knocking on the door of the Eredivisie first team, RTV Noord reported.

Lukkien praised the structure of the club’s youth system, noting that young players earn their opportunities through consistent performances in the academy ranks rather than sheer chance. The top week initiative serves as a direct bridge between youth football and the Eredivisie squad, allowing the coaching staff to assess which teenagers are ready to handle the physical and tactical demands of professional league matches.

Monitoring the Next Wave of Eredivisie Prospects

The club’s technical staff continues to monitor the Under-19 and reserve groups as Groningen prepares for its upcoming fixture schedule in the Dutch top flight.
