A controversy has erupted over the demolition of a gateball field in Icheon City’s Yongmyeon neighborhood, which was constructed using public funds in 2015. The field was dismantled in January to make way for a tennis practice area, but the process has been disputed by residents.
Disputed Demolition
The gateball field, located in Yongmyeon-ri, Shin-dun-myeon, was reportedly demolished without formal approval or proper procedures. Residents claim that the demolition was carried out on January 26, just a day after a village meeting discussed the possibility of renting out the facility. However, the village head acknowledged that the demolition was done to make way for a tennis practice area, with the costs covered by a tennis official.
“국가대표 경력이 있는 테니스 관계자가 무료 강습 등을 하겠다고 해 추진했다”며 “철거 비용도 해당 관계자가 사비로 부담했다”
Conflicting Accounts
The village head claimed that the demolition was discussed at the annual village meeting and that the Shin-dun-myeon mayor was informed. However, residents dispute this account, stating that no formal agreement was reached. Residents have conflicting reports on the usage of the gateball field before it was demolished, with some stating it was used normally until the end of last year, while the village head claims it was hardly used.

Calls for Accountability
Residents have petitioned for an investigation into the demolition, calling for accountability and clarification on who authorized the demolition and who will bear the costs of restoration. The city of Icheon has demanded that the facility be restored to its original state three times, but no clear plan has been put in place.
The issue remains unresolved, with questions surrounding the legitimacy of the demolition, the role of administrative authorities, and the allocation of responsibility for restoration costs.
