Daniil Medvedev secured his 50th match win of the season at the Erste Bank Open on Wednesday, defeating Spanish qualifier Daniel Merida 7:6 (7/5), 6:1 in 87 minutes at the Wiener Stadthalle. While the third-seeded Russian advanced to the second round of the ATP 500 tournament, American ninth seed Frances Tiafoe became the first top-ten player eliminated from the draw, losing 6:7 (6/8), 5:7 to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. The American player and former Vienna finalist could not collect further points as hoped for his desired qualification for the ATP Finals.
Medvedev Overcomes Early Deficit Against Merida
The 30-year-old former world number one found himself trailing 0:3 in the opening set after dropping serve early. Medvedev, who was disqualified three weeks prior in the Beijing semi-final against Novak Djokovic due to hitting a ball into the public, attributed his slow start to the conditions in Vienna, noting that the indoor hard courts are noticeably slower than the surface in Almaty, where he won the tournament the previous week. It is a much slower court than in Almaty, Medvedev said. It was therefore a bit difficult at the beginning to get used to it.
After recovering a break to make it 4:5, Medvedev edged out the opening set in a tiebreak before dominating the second set 6:1. He has his place at the ATP Finals all but secured. The 2022 Vienna winner turned a 3:5 deficit into a 7:5 win in the tiebreak. He will face British player Cameron Norrie in the round of 16 at the Stadthalle.
Musetti Eliminates Tiafoe in Straight Sets
In the day’s other major upset, Frances Tiafoe missed out on crucial points for his ATP Finals qualification race by falling to Lyon champion Lorenzo Musetti. The first set featured intense baseline rallies and missed opportunities, with Musetti failing to convert a set point at 6:5 before Tiafoe squandered two set points at 6:4 in the tiebreak. Musetti ultimately claimed the breaker and secured a late break at 5:5 in the second set before serving out the match to love.
Upcoming Second-Round Matches in Vienna
With Medvedev advancing to meet Cameron Norrie, Lorenzo Musetti moves on to face Arthur Fery in the next round. Musetti’s progression could potentially set up a quarterfinal clash with top-seeded German Alexander Zverev, who advanced in the tournament earlier in the week alongside Carlos Alcaraz.
