Dabo Swinney Maintains Clemson ACC Title Hopes After Miami Loss

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney remains defiant about his team’s Atlantic Coast Conference prospects following a 41-13 blowout loss to No. 4 Miami on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, insisting the Tigers are still progressing despite dropping to 3-2 on the season.

The gap between the Atlantic Coast Conference’s elite and its former standard-bearer was laid bare under the lights in Clemson, South Carolina. No. 4 Miami defeated Clemson 41-13 on Saturday night, seizing sole possession of first place in the conference standings and improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in ACC play.

Miami struck just two minutes into the contest when Darian Mensah threw a quick tunnel screen to Cooper Barkate, who beat two defenders and raced 66 yards for a touchdown. Mensah finished the night passing for 227 yards and a touchdown while adding a 34-yard scoring run. Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. contributed 77 yards and two touchdowns for the Hurricanes, who generated 192 total rushing yards against a struggling Clemson front.

For Clemson, the 28-point margin marked the fourth worse loss for the Tigers under Swinney. Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds completed 29 of 44 passes for a career-high 295 yards with one interception, but the Tigers’ rushing attack was neutralized, managing just 55 yards on 31 carries. Clemson also committed 10 penalties for 91 yards.

Twice the Tigers committed penalties inside the Miami 10-yard line as promising drives stalled out.

Dabo Swinney Defends Team Outlook Despite Consecutive Blowouts

Entering Saturday’s primetime matchup as 17.5-point home underdogs—the largest spread in the Dabo Swinney era—Clemson dropped its second game of the year against a national contender, following a 51-10 defeat at No. 11 LSU in Week 1. Yet Swinney dismissed suggestions that his squad is no longer competitive in the conference race.

Absolutely. Absolutely.

Swinney emphasized that despite the lopsided scorelines against elite competition, the team retains a path forward in the league. We’re just going to keep battling. We’ll keep battling. Got a lot of opportunity ahead, he said after midnight locally as storms moved into the area.

“And hey, we’re 3-2; we hoped we’d be 5-0 right now, 4-1 at worst. But we’re 3-2. But we’re, what, 2-1 in the ACC? We’re right here. We’re right there. We just gotta dig in, man. Gotta go play. There’s a lot of opportunity for this team.”

When speaking to reporters more than a half-hour after midnight locally just as storms finally rolled in, Swinney offered a realistic assessment of the contest. The score is not indicative of how they competed, Swinney stated. Tough ball game. They were the better team, they’re a really, really talented team. Frustrating night. A missed opportunity.

Reflecting on the broader state of his squad, Swinney expressed confidence despite the daunting deficits. I think we grew in a lot of areas. I know it feels weird to say that after a loss, Swinney added. I’m confident in what we’re doing. I’m confident that we’re going to get that right.

Contrasting Program Trajectories Highlight Shift in ACC Power

The matchup served as a stark demonstration of changing fortunes in the ACC. Miami has supplanted Clemson as the conference’s premier program under Mario Cristobal, contrasting sharply with how the two head coaches have navigated the modern era of the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness compensation.

While Clemson won eight conference titles between 2015 and 2024, the program’s high school recruiting classes have slipped, with its last top-10 class coming in 2021. Conversely, Miami has secured multiple top-10 recruiting and transfer classes under Cristobal since December 2021.

Following the victory, Cristobal praised Clemson’s roster, noting that the Tigers feature a couple of potential first-round NFL draft picks and roughly a dozen future professionals among their 105 players.

“Four years ago when we came down here, we had just gotten to Miami with a roster that wasn’t what it was supposed to be and unfortunately we got our faces kicked in. I’m proud of the way the guys continued to battle, and fight when so many guys went down with injuries. We had several freshmen in the game at several points.”

Bye Weeks and Remaining Schedules for Tigers and Hurricanes

Both programs enter a bye week before returning to action on October 17. Miami’s open date arrives after a physically taxing contest that saw several players sustain injuries, including starting defensive lineman Marquise Lightfoot, right guard Max Buchanan, right tackle Matthew McCoy, and receiver Malachi Toney. The Hurricanes will host rival Florida State at Hard Rock Stadium when play resumes.

Clemson will use the week off to recalibrate and heal before hosting Charleston Southern on October 17. The Tigers face no more ranked opponents for the remainder of the regular season, with remaining matchups against Virginia Tech, Florida State, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Duke, and South Carolina.
