Havana Industriales Wear Private Logos
For the first time in the history of Cuba’s National Baseball Series, the Havana Industriales have taken the field wearing jerseys bearing private enterprise sponsor logos.
Private Sponsorships Enter the National Baseball Series
The Industriales debuted their new sponsored uniforms at the opening of the current National Baseball Series, while matching advertisements from the same private enterprise appeared along the outfield fences of their home venue, Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana. Team third baseman Ángel Alfredo Hechavarria told reporters that the arrangement is unprecedented. This is the first time something like this happens,
Hechavarria said. I don’t know what it feels like to have a sponsor yet. Hopefully, this sponsorship brings practical benefits. That’s what we expect, and hopefully, it works out.

The Industriales are not alone in seeking commercial sponsorship. League officials confirmed that the team from Villa Clara Province is currently negotiating a sponsorship agreement with a local private entrepreneur. For a country that has for decades rejected professional sports and commercial advertising, the change is unexpected.
Industriales manager Guillermo Carmona acknowledged the change while defending its necessity. This is definitely going to help,
Carmona said. Without a doubt, it is a new method. It might be a capitalist method or it might not. But either way, we are looking for ways to keep our country moving forward.
Economic Pressures and Energy Shortages Shrink the Schedule
The introduction of commercial backing arrives against the backdrop of broad structural changes across Cuba. In June, the Cuban government unveiled a series of free-market economic reforms. At the same time, Miguel Díaz-Canel has maintained that the country has not abandoned socialism. We first have to insist on continuing to advance the construction of socialism,
Díaz-Canel stated, pointing to the ongoing impact of United States trade restrictions.
At the local level, the logistical strain is visible. In addition to the long-standing U.S. trade embargo, measures implemented during the administration of U.S. Donald Trump prevented fuel from being transported to Cuba, contributing to electrical blackouts that frequently exceed 30 hours. To conserve resources, baseball organizers cut the new season schedule down to 44 games per team. The tournament structure was divided into Western and Eastern conferences, each split into two four-team groups to minimize travel.
Player Exodus and Resource Shortages Threaten Local Competition
Local fan club president Luisa Alvares noted that many athletes have been forced to leave Cuba to join overseas teams where compensation is higher. We all know the situation the country is going through, Alvares said.
