Cuba defeated Mexico 5-4 in nine innings on Friday during the second day of the initial round at the XVI U-18 Baseball Pan American Championship, held at the IPL Academy complex in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
Extra-Inning Drama in Boca Chica
The match required the World Baseball Softball Confederation tiebreaker rule in the ninth inning to determine a winner. Dairon Orlando Espinosa Aguilar delivered a single into center field that drove in the decisive run for Cuba. In the bottom half of the frame, Mexico failed to answer as Brandon Alexis Herrera González grounded into a double play and Héctor Hernán Luque Valle flayed out for the third out, sealing the result.
Relief pitcher Luis Daniel Rodríguez Cruz earned the victory after working two full innings. Pedro Gabriel Salas Muñiz took the loss for Mexico after entering in relief.
Swinging Momentum in Pool B
The contest featured constant lead changes. Mexico opened the scoring in the first inning before Cuba leveled the score in the third. Both squads remained tied heading into the eighth, when the Cuban side plated two runs. Mexico answered immediately with two runs of its own in the bottom of the eighth to knot the score at 4-4 and force the extra frame.
Anthony Iván Navarro Benites led Cuba offensively by going 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, a double, and a walk. Samuel Matos Espinosa contributed a 1-for-4 performance with a double and two RBIs. For Mexico, Alex Gildardo Tolosa Mendoza hit a solo home run and drove in two runs, while Luis Gustavo Guajardo Ochoa finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Cuba Wins First Game as Mexico Falls to 0-2
The victory marks Cuba’s first win of the tournament after dropping a 5-4 decision to Venezuela on Wednesday’s opening day, a game where the team surrendered a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning. Mexico dropped to 0-2 in Group B following an opening 9-4 defeat against Nicaragua.

The 11-team continental tournament features three groups and offers four qualifying berths for the 2027 U-18 Baseball World Cup in Pingtan, China. The top two teams from each group advance to the Super Round scheduled for October 25 to 28.
Domestic Disruptions for Cuban Youth Baseball
The youth national program arrives at the international qualifier amid severe domestic organizational hurdles. In May 2026, the Cuban National Baseball Commission suspended national championships across the Under-12, Under-15, and Under-18 categories due to an ongoing energy crisis and a lack of fuel for interprovincial transport, replacing standard tournaments with regional physical and technical evaluations.
