Countdown Begins: Lianyungang Gears Up for the 21st Jiangsu Provincial Games Opening Ceremony

The 21st Provincial Games of Jiangsu will open on October 15 at the Lianyungang Sports Center, bringing together athletes from across the region with just three days left until the official ceremony, according to reports from local media outlets including Sohu. As the final countdown begins, venue preparations, stage rehearsals, and preliminary competitions are drawing to a close across Lianyungang.

Final Venue Preparations and Rehearsals in Lianyungang

Workers and performers are currently putting the finishing touches on the main venue at the Lianyungang Sports Center. Staff members conducted comprehensive cleaning operations at the site, while actors advanced their program rehearsals for the opening ceremony. Technical teams from local telecommunications and power departments synchronized equipment testing and installation work to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely. Additionally, municipal projects completed six prominent provincial games-themed green sculptures across the city, including installations at the Lianyungang Sports Center, Huaguoshan Hotel, and Haizhouwan Conference Center.

Preliminary Events Conclude Across Multiple Disciplines

While organizers finalize the main venue, several preliminary competitions have wrapped up or are currently underway across different divisions. The职工部 (Workers’ Division) tug-of-war competition took place on October 11 at the Lianyungang Lianyun District Culture and Sports Center, drawing 460 athletes spread across 23 teams from across the province. Earlier in the month, the youth division events brought high-level competition to the region, featuring over 200 participants in the taekwondo tournament at the Lianyungang Sports Center and 113 competitors in the judo event. In regional team sports, the “Guhuai” Cup youth basketball tournament concluded its ten-day run in Donghai, where the Changzhou, Nantong, and泰州 (Taizhou) squads took the top three spots in the boys’ bracket, while Nanjing, Suzhou, and Wuxi claimed the podium in the girls’ division.

Intense Training Regimens Across Municipalities

Athletes from the “Thirteen Prefectures” of Jiangsu have spent months sharpening their skills in preparation for the provincial showcase. Training centers in Changzhou operated full regimens for gymnastics, swimming, and table tennis teams earlier in the summer. In Huaian, local parkour athletes trained through high summer temperatures to build endurance, obstacle-crossing abilities, and tumbling techniques. Meanwhile, young players on the football team at the Hebin Street experimental school in Suqian continued their outdoor training sessions through adverse weather conditions to prepare for the under-12 provincial tournament.

Schedule of Upcoming Events and Competitions

The grand opening ceremony is officially scheduled for October 15, 2024, at the Lianyungang Sports Center, marking the culmination of years of regional sports development and infrastructure updates. Events span multiple venues throughout Lianyungang, including the Lianyungang Sports Center Natatorium, which previously hosted a 1,175-person swimming preliminary in July.
