Ed Dawson, the head coach the Cornell football team, died during Friday night's game at Rochester.

Medical personnel administered CPR to Dawson for several minutes before emergency responders transported him to a local hospital in Beaver County, where he was pronounced dead. At the time the game was halted due to the emergency, Cornell held a 16-6 lead over Rochester in the contest. Officials did not publicly disclose the specific nature of the medical emergency that claimed his life.

Beaver County emergency dispatchers confirmed that medics responded directly to the sideline at the Rochester football field. Tributes immediately began circulating across social media late Friday night as members of the Western Pennsylvania football community learned of Dawson’s death. Photographer Ed Thompson, who covers high school athletics in the region, shared the news on X, describing him as a great coach and an even better man who was lost while coaching his team against Rochester. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart coach Donnie Militzer wrote on X that he was gutted by the loss, praising Dawson as a great friend and coach who cared deeply about every kid. Bethany College coach David Blake and the WPIAL Insider account also shared public prayers and condolences for the Cornell head coach.

Revival of Cornell Football Program

Dawson took over as head coach of the Raiders in 2011, inheriting a program that faced severe roster constraints.

Following his first season, declining participation forced Cornell to suspend varsity football in 2012.

A cooperative agreement with Quaker Valley followed. Dawson served as an assistant and a program liaison for several years during the suspension.

When Cornell stepped away from football in 2012, a lot of people assumed Friday nights here were over. Coach Dawson didn’t accept that. When the returned in 2016, he started with a few dozen kids and a lot of faith, Coraopolis Mayor Michael Dixon wrote in a public statement.

Under his guidance, the program clawed its way back to prominence. Dawson led the Raiders to their first conference championship in 36 years and into the WPIAL semifinals in 2019, earning the Beaver County Times high school football coach of the year honors that same year. Two seasons later, he guided the squad to a 7-2 record and the program’s first outright conference title in 38 seasons. Across 12 total seasons at Cornell, Dawson compiled a 49-54 career record on the sideline. Before taking over the head coaching position in 2011, he had also spent two years as a Cornell assistant.

Tributes from Western Pennsylvania Leaders

News of the coach’s passing reverberated instantly through Western Pennsylvania high school athletics. Cornell School District Superintendent Aaron Thomas released a statement expressing deep grief on behalf of the district and the borough.

It is hard to put into words what Coach Dawson means to Cornell and we are all heart broken, crushed, and in shock.

Thomas added that the district would ensure students and staff have access to support resources during the coming days. Rochester Area School District Superintendent Joseph Guarino extended condolences from his district, pledging assistance to the grieving football community.
