“Nos vamos muy contentos. Toda la organización está feliz de cómo ha transcurrido la semana,” stated José Manuel Calderón, assistant general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers, following the team’s training camp in Andalusia.
The Cleveland Cavaliers concluded their training camp in Málaga on Sunday, wrapping up a multi-day preparation block held at The Embassy in Fuengirola alongside a final intra-squad scrimmage and media availability at the Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena. The NBA franchise now travels to face the Boston Celtics in their opening preseason matchup on Friday, October 9, leading into the 2026–27 regular-season tip-off scheduled for October 20.
Technical Staff and Ownership Pleased with Fuengirola Sessions
Calderón reported that both the coaching staff, front office, and franchise ownership—who stayed in Málaga throughout the concentration—expressed complete satisfaction with the team’s early progress.
“La verdad es que están felices,” Calderón noted regarding the management team. “Hemos tenido una semana muy buena de entrenamiento y, además, es nuestra primera semana real de trabajo.” Beyond the hardwood, Calderón emphasized the value of the team experiencing local Spanish culture across various points of the Málaga province.
Player Perspectives on the Andalusian Atmosphere
Veteran guard James Harden praised the environment and the local fan base during the team’s stay on the Costa del Sol. “Los aficionados aquí son increíbles. Gracias por recibirnos,” Harden said, highlighting the favorable weather, local gastronomy, and high-intensity training sessions.
Guard Donovan Mitchell, visiting Málaga for the fourth time, shared that the trip allowed him to experience the city alongside his family.
Forward Mario Hezonja highlighted the region's deep basketball roots, describing Málaga as a city that passionately supports the sport. Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign, Hezonja outlined his individual objectives with the franchise: “Quiero ser una pieza muy importante que contribya a que el equipo gane,” the Croatian player stated.
Front Office Transition for Calderón
Reflecting on his internal transition within the organization, Calderón addressed his expanded duties in the Cleveland front office. “Estoy feliz de que ellos apostaran por mí y de tener este rol, con mucha responsabilidad,” he said. “Esto es solo el principio de temporada. Estoy contento y sigo creciendo y aprendiendo con este grupo.”
Preseason Opener Against Boston Celtics
With the Mediterranean training camp officially closed, the Cavaliers shift their focus to competitive preparation. Cleveland meets the Boston Celtics on Friday, October 9, in their first preseason test before commencing the 2026–27 NBA regular season on October 20.
