Christoph Baumgartner returned to competitive football after more than 140 days on the sidelines, providing an assist during RB Leipzig’s 3–1 defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. The midfielder entered the match in the 78th minute following a lengthy absence caused by an injury sustained just before the World Cup start.
Bernabéu Comeback After 140 Days Out
Baumgartner acknowledged the emotional weight of his return following the final whistle in the Spanish capital. “It was an extremely emotional day for me to be back after such a long time, it was wonderful,” Baumgartner said after the match. “In this competition, against this opponent, in this stadium. There is nothing cooler. There is also nothing worse for a footballer than not being involved for so long and missing a World Cup. That was certainly the hardest phase in my career. I have to handle it carefully, but the fire is back.”

Real secured the victory through goals from Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé, Tidiam Gomis, and Yan Diomande. Silva opened the scoring for the hosts right before halftime in the 44th minute after Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt failed to secure a ball. Early in the second half, Jude Bellingham delivered a cross that Mbappé headed toward the goal, allowing Güler to tap it in for a 52nd-minute strike. Mbappé added his goal in the 82nd minute before Baumgartner made his impact felt.
Late Assist Sparks Brief Leipzig Hope
With Leipzig trailing late in the match, Baumgartner provided the assist for Leipzig’s goal by Tidiam Gomis in the 85th minute. Yan Diomande set the final score in the 87th minute.
While Baumgartner watched the opening hour from the bench, his compatriot Nicolas Seiwald featured in the starting lineup for the German side. Leipzig created several scoring opportunities against the Spanish side before the break.
Bayern Munich Fight Back to Draw Arsenal
Elsewhere in the Champions League, Bayern Munich battled to a 2–2 draw against Arsenal. Eberechi Eze opened the scoring for the visitors in the 25th minute after evading Konrad Laimer to finish into the far corner following a long pass from Martin Ødegaard. A video assistant referee review confirmed the goal stood without an offside infraction.
Alphonso Davies restored parity for the hosts ten minutes later by shaking off his marker to finish a pass from Harry Kane. Following a turbulent start to the second half that saw both goalkeepers make crucial saves—including Manuel Neuer tipping a Bruno Guimarães header onto the crossbar—Bayern took the lead. Jurrien Timber handled the ball inside the area during a 60th-minute defensive scramble, and Kane converted the ensuing penalty.
The penalty marked Kane’s scoring success in his tenth Champions League match in a row and his 16th goal against Arsenal. However, Arsenal secured a point in the 82nd minute when Declan Rice concluded a fluid passing sequence to level the score at 2–2.
