Christa Deguchi Delivers Eight Straight Wins at Wolf Aron Cup
Christa Deguchi, the 2024 Olympic women’s 57-kilogram judo champion representing Canada, went undefeated in eight matches against children during a special tournament appearance, news.yahoo.co.jp reported. The 30-year-old athlete competed on October 25 as a special guest at the Wolf Aron Cup, a regional autumn judo tournament held in Tokyo’s Katsushika Ward.
The event serves as the namesake tournament for Wolf Aron, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic 100-kilogram gold medalist who now wrestles professionally for New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Aron invited Deguchi to participate in a series of exhibition matches billed as a retirement-style showdown against young competitors. Deguchi finished the day 8-0 in those bouts.
“I was told it was going to be one match, but it turned out to be eight,” Deguchi told reporters after the bouts, laughing off the surprise workload. “I can’t forgive that, and I wasn’t prepared, but it was fun.”
Deguchi Launches Youth Judo Tournament in Nagano
Both Olympians share an active commitment to expanding youth judo participation across Japan. Deguchi launched her own children’s tournament, titled “The First Step,” in her home prefecture of Nagano starting in 2025. Organizing the grassroots competition required her to step outside traditional athlete duties, including direct outreach to corporate sponsors.
“I learned just how difficult it is to run a tournament,” Deguchi said, noting that she personally visits companies to pitch her vision. “I’m not doing it for my own profit; I want to nurture the next generation and keep working hard.”
Looking toward future events, Deguchi issued a playful challenge to her fellow Olympian regarding next year’s schedule. “It’s probably difficult for Aron this year, but he has to come wearing a judo gi next year,” she said.
Rejecting Professional Wrestling While Keeping Up With Friends
During a talk show segment at the tournament, Aron floated the idea of Deguchi crossing over into professional wrestling, a transition he made following his own judo career. Deguchi immediately dismissed the proposal on the spot.
“I know professional wrestling isn’t a gentle world, so I can’t say I’ll do it on a whim, and I can’t lightly say I’m interested,” Deguchi said. “Don’t say it so easily (laughs). It’s a bit tough, and I don’t have that kind of readiness.”
“I haven’t been able to go see a match yet,” she said. “Since it’s come to this, I want to go see a match on a really special occasion.”
