Chongqing Athletes Win 14 Medals at Nagoya Asian Para Games, Breaking Historic Records

Chongqing athletes representing China secured a historic total of 14 medals—comprising one gold, five silver, and eight bronze—at the 5th Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, which concluded on October 24. The performance breaks previous records for Chongqing’s participation in the games and includes a breakthrough first-ever medal in archery for Chongqing competitors.

Delegation Secures 14 Medals Across Four Sports

Eleven athletes from Chongqing competed across four disciplines: table tennis, badminton, archery, and boccia. The delegation’s total of 14 medals establishes a new benchmark for Chongqing’s participation in the Asian Para Games. The competition featured regional delegations from across Asia, with Chinese competitors participating across multiple sporting classifications.

Archery Breakthrough Led by Debutant Yun Duo

The delegation earned its first-ever archery medal at the Asian Para Games through debutant Yun Duo, representing Chongqing’s Chengkou County. On October 23, Yun partnered with Sichuan competitor Zhao Lixue to win the silver medal in the men’s recurve double team event. On October 24, the final day of competition, Yun added a bronze medal in the archery individual event. Yun, who lost his right leg at age 15, transitioned from shooting to archery and previously secured Chongqing’s first archery medal at the National Para Games.

Liao Kelike and Yan Shuo Win Table Tennis Gold

In table tennis, Liao Kelike and Yan Shuo secured the delegation’s sole gold medal on October 23. Facing a 0:2 deficit against their Thai opponents in the men’s doubles MD14 class final, the pair rallied to win three consecutive games, taking the match 3:2. In the women’s doubles WD5 class, Huang Zhirui and Liu Jing earned a bronze medal.

Huang Zhirui, at 17 years old the youngest member of the Chinese delegation, also claimed a silver medal in the women’s TT3 singles event. Huang, who has been unable to stand since experiencing a spinal cord injury at age 5, began playing table tennis as part of her rehabilitation. Following her matches in Nagoya, Huang is scheduled to compete at the World Para Table Tennis Championships in Thailand.

Badminton Squad Adds Three Silver Medals

Chongqing’s badminton competitors secured three silver medals in single-day matches. Xiao Zhexian earned a silver medal in the SL3 women’s singles final before teaming with Yang Qiuxia to take another silver in the SL3-SU5 women’s doubles event. Yang Fan and Xu Tingting also secured a silver medal in the WH1-2 women's doubles competition.
