Thai authorities arrested a 51-year-old Chinese national at Don Mueang International Airport on Oct. 11, 2024, connecting him to an alleged in-flight credit card theft ring operating on domestic flights across Thailand, according to local police reports.
Airport Interception and Seized Evidence
Bangkok’s 2nd Division Metropolitan Police, alongside the Don Mueang Police Station investigative unit, detained the suspect, identified as Zheng, at 4:00 p.m. local time near a domestic arrivals jet bridge. Police records show officers seized multiple credit cards, two mobile phones, foreign currency from 12 countries, 35,950 Thai baht in cash, a black shoulder bag, a black jacket, and a baseball cap during the arrest.
Passenger Reports and Unauthorized Transactions
The investigation began after two separate victims filed formal complaints at Don Mueang Airport Police Station regarding missing items and fraudulent overseas charges. The first victim reported taking a domestic flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok on Oct. 5. Upon arrival, the passenger received bank text alerts showing an attempted purchase of approximately 20,000 Thai baht in Heyuan, Guangdong Province, China, which failed.

Checking the banking application further, the victim discovered three earlier successful transactions totaling roughly 265,067 Thai baht. The victim told investigators that the credit cards and cash had been packed inside a shoulder bag placed in the overhead luggage compartment directly above the passenger seat. A second passenger filed a similar report on Oct. 7, stating that 25,000 Thai baht in cash and credit cards had vanished from an overhead bag during a flight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Witnesses on the second flight told authorities they spotted a foreign-looking man rummaging through the overhead bins near the victim’s seat.
Modus Operandi and Flight Manifest Cross-Checks
Investigators linked the two complaints after matching passenger manifests from the respective flights, confirming that Zheng was onboard both aircraft. Police officials outlined the suspect’s alleged method, noting that operators typically board flights alone and remain uncommunicative. Roughly 30 minutes after takeoff, as passengers begin to rest, the suspect stands up under the guise of retrieving personal items, instead sorting through nearby overhead compartments for cash and cards.
Financial transaction traces reviewed by police revealed that funds stolen from the victims were moved via WeChat Pay or Alipay platforms, subsequently funneled through digital red packets to acquaintances and female associates, or directed toward football gambling activities. Digital forensic checks on the suspect’s phone history also uncovered searches related to credit card point-of-sale terminals.
Travel History and Ongoing Criminal Probe
Immigration and airport logs reviewed by investigators established that Zheng had entered and exited Thailand 37 times through Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports, alongside two border crossings via Chiang Rai, starting from late 2024. Bangkok police confirmed that the inquiry remains active to determine whether additional co-conspirators or wider syndicates operated alongside the suspect.
