China Men’s National Football Team Set for Guangzhou Four-Nation Tournament in November
The Chinese men’s national football team will return to Guangzhou for a Four-Nation Invitation Tournament in November, playing fixtures against Malaysia and Bahrain at Tianhe Stadium, according to an announcement by the Chinese Football Association.
The matches mark the national team’s return to Guangzhou. The Chinese Football Association scheduled the tournament to run during the November international window, providing head coach Shao Jiayi a final competitive testing ground ahead of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Tournament Schedule and Venue Split
China’s two matches are set for November 14 against Malaysia and November 17 against Bahrain, with both fixtures hosted at Tianhe Stadium. A third invited side, Yemen, will not play the host nation. Instead, matches involving Malaysia, Bahrain, and Yemen will take place at Yuexiu Mountain Stadium.
The event brings international football back to Tianhe Stadium for the first time since October 10, 2019, when China defeated Guam 7–0 in a 40-team World Cup qualification match under Italian manager Marcello Lippi. Guangzhou Light Industry Group subsidiary Shuangyu Sports Culture brought the fixtures back to the city.
Squad Boost and International Rankings Context
China enters the November window ranked 96th globally and 15th in the Asian Football Confederation, following consecutive defeats in previous warm-up matches. The tournament serves as a key opportunity for the squad to collect FIFA ranking points.
Coach Shao Jiayi will have access to a full-strength roster for the tournament. Several key national team players who missed previous fixtures due to commitments with the national team at the concurrent Asian Games are set to return.
Opponent Profiles: Malaysia and Bahrain
Malaysia arrives ranked 133rd in the world. The team drew 0–0 with eventual champion Indonesia in the group stage of the recent ASEAN Championship, missing out on the final only on goal difference before defeating Vietnam in the third-place playoff. Vietnam sits just three places above China in the global rankings.
Bahrain sits 97th in the world and 16th in Asia, one spot behind China. Bahrain exited the recent Gulf Cup in the group stage and suffered a three-match losing streak, mirroring China’s recent results. The teams last met during the 18-team stage of the World Cup qualifiers, where China secured 1–0 victories both home and away.
Revival of Guangzhou Football Atmosphere
The return of the national team coincides with an upward swing in Guangzhou’s domestic football scene. Guangzhou Leopard secured promotion in China League One four rounds ahead of schedule, returning the city to the top tiers of professional league football. The Chinese Football Association also plans to host its annual professional leagues awards ceremony in Guangzhou at the conclusion of the domestic season.
Ticket information for the Four-Nation Invitation Tournament at Tianhe Stadium will be released in the coming days.
