FC Bayern München was held to a 3-3 draw by Norwegian underdog Viking Stavanger in Tuesday’s Champions League match, failing to secure a win despite a second-half resurgence. The German record champion, forced to play with ten men after a late red card, saw its lead evaporate in the final minute, leaving the club winless for the second match.
Stavanger’s Early Advantage
The match began with a defensive struggle for the visitors. The situation worsened in the 38th minute when Peter Christiansen broke away from the Bayern defense to double the lead for the Norwegian hosts. The match marked the first Champions League home game for the reigning Norwegian champions and served as the first time in 20 years that Bayern played a competitive match on artificial turf. With Manuel Neuer sidelined due to a foot injury, Jonas Urbig started in goal, while the opposition was led by the coaching duo of Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim and Morten Jensen, who had lost only one home match since August 2025.
Kane’s Role in the Comeback
Bayern’s offense found its footing after the break. Harry Kane initiated the shift in momentum by converting a penalty in the 54th minute, which was awarded after Konrad Laimer was fouled in the box. Six minutes later, Kane leveled the score at 2-2 with a header from a Joshua Kimmich cross. In the 71st minute, Kane provided the assist for Luis Diaz, who gave Bayern their first lead of the night. This marked Kane’s ninth Champions League match with a goal, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 11. The team’s second-half intensity mirrored their 5-0 victory over FK Bodø/Glimt one month prior, where all goals were also scored after the interval.
Olise’s Exit and the Final Equalizer
The momentum shifted back to the hosts following a disciplinary incident involving Michael Olise. In the 74th minute, Olise was shown a second yellow card—resulting in a dismissal—after a tactical foul followed by an altercation where he threw the ball at an opponent. Referee expert Patrick Ittrich stated to Prime Video, That is classic red, there is nothing to discuss.
With the man advantage, Viking Stavanger intensified their pressure. In the 90th minute, Herman Haugen scored the equalizer to secure a 3-3 draw. We were simply not smart, not against Augsburg and not today.
And we shot ourselves in the foot with this red card.
Standings and Upcoming Fixtures
The draw leaves Bayern with two points from their opening matches in the league phase, currently placing them fourth in the Bundesliga standings. Viking Stavanger, meanwhile, earned their first point of the campaign. Bayern’s next test is scheduled for Saturday at 18:30 CET, when they host RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. Olise will be suspended for the upcoming Champions League fixture against Arsenal on October 21.
