Severe weather alerts issued by the Generalitat de Catalunya have forced the suspension of sports fixtures across the Girona region and large parts of Catalonia, halting weekend competition from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon.
Generalitat Decree Limits Weekend Movement and Halts Girona Sport
Torrential rain forecasts prompted the Catalan government to issue an emergency decree restricting non-essential mobility from 20:00 local time on Saturday until 14:00 on Sunday in areas placed under maximum weather warning. In the Girona province, the restrictions directly impact Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Garrotxa, Gironès, Pla de l’Estany, Ripollès, and Selva, suspending all scheduled fixtures within that window.
Official postponements arrived steadily as governing bodies and clubs adjusted to the civil protection orders. The Tercera RFEF football fixture between Cornellà and Peralada, the OK Plata roller hockey match pitting Sant Cugat against GEiEG, and the Primera Divisió handball derby between Sarrià and Bordils were among the early evening cancellations confirmed on Saturday.
Roller Hockey and Regional Football Schedules Disrupted
Roller hockey fixtures across the Catalan league schedule also felt the impact of the storm warnings. Scheduled Lliga Catalana matchups between Lloret and FC Barcelona, as well as Reus against SHUM, were called off. Sunday’s Tercera RFEF football encounter between Muntanyesa and L’Escala joined the growing list of postponed matches.
The Catalan Football Federation (FCF) announced the postponement of the vast majority of matches involving teams from the affected counties. Acting on recommendations from Meteocat, Protecció Civil, public institutions, and local police, the federation suspended all football and futsal matches starting from 17:00 on Saturday in the Barcelona and Ebre regions. The suspension expands on Sunday from 08:00 to 14:00 across Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Pla de l’Estany, Garrotxa, Ripollès, Gironès, La Selva, Osona, Moianès, Vallès Oriental, Maresme, Vallès Occidental, Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès, Garraf, Tarragonès, and Baix Camp.
