Carolina Caro falls short of sambo World Championship podium in Greece

Spanish sambo competitor Carolina Caro missed a podium finish at the World Sambo Championships held in Greece from September 30 to October 5, losing the cadet 50-kilogram bronze medal match 4-3 to Mexico’s Morales.

Path Through the Cadet Bracket

Competing under the Spanish national team banner in the cadet -50kg division, Caro opened her tournament run with a dominant 12-0 victory over Latvia’s Mahajeva in the round of 16. She advanced past the quarterfinals by defeating Serbia’s Ivanovic 6-3 before reaching the medal rounds.

Domestic Titles and Club Background

Caro represents the Club de Lucha Torrejón de Ardoz, an organization presided over by José Manuel Ruiz García-Morales. Domestically, she secured her third Spanish championship this season, added a Madrid regional title, and claimed the national beach sambo crown in the -48kg weight class. Alongside her sambo credentials, she competes as a judoka with Club Sakura, collecting multiple medals in that discipline.

Sambo Rules Permit Joint Locks, Prohibit Choking

Recognized by the Federación Internacional de Luchas Asociadas alongside Greco-Roman, freestyle, and grappling, sambo combines elements of Olympic freestyle wrestling and judo. Unlike judo, the sport permits all varieties of knee and ankle joint locks while strictly prohibiting choking techniques. Combat sambo divisions further incorporate striking techniques, including kicks and punches, across both standing and ground exchanges.

Municipal Recognition and Future Outlook

Alejandro Navarro of Torrejón de Ardoz, acknowledged the athlete’s performance following the international competition. “Congratulations on the great world championship you have put together,” Navarro stated, noting that competing against top global athletes provides valuable experience for her athletic development.
