Capitals Defeat Hurricanes 5-2 in Season Opener as Alex Tuch Scores Twice

Alex Tuch scored twice in his Washington debut, powering the Capitals to a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in their season opener on Friday night at the Lenovo Center. Goalie Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots as Washington built an early three-goal lead and held off Carolina’s push.

Alex Tuch Shines in Washington Debut with Two Goals

Playing his first game in a Washington uniform, Alex Tuch wasted no time making an impact by scoring two goals in the opening period.

His fast start matched a franchise milestone, making him only the second player in team history to score multiple goals in the first period of his Capitals debut. Brian Bellows previously accomplished the feat on March 28, 1998.

Tuch’s first goal came after Pierre-Luc Dubois outworked Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi behind the net, leaving a vacant cage. Later in the frame, Tuch added his second tally to cap off a dominant opening twenty minutes for the visiting side. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery recounted a joke made on the bench after the game about the immediate value of his new forward.

“I don’t know who said it, but someone said something on the bench after his first two goals of like, ‘We got you on a discount.’ or something like that.”

Carbery added that Tuch was outstanding tonight and played as arguably the best player on the ice.

Capitals Depth and Logan Thompson Overpower the Opposition

The offensive production extended well beyond the newcomer. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun contributed a power-play goal and an assist, while forward Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson also found the back of the net. Dylan Strome and Dubois each recorded two assists to support a balanced attack.

At the other end of the ice, Logan Thompson turned aside 31 of 33 shots to anchor the defense. His performance included stopping 14 of 15 shorthanded attempts during a stretch where the Hurricanes had six consecutive power plays across the second and third periods.

“I think that’s the expectations of our group, We’ve got four deep lines, and I think we showcased well a lot of depth tonight. For our first game, going against the defending Stanley Cup champs, that was not an easy one, but I thought we stuck together and grinded it out.”

Carolina Struggles in Home Opener After Another Defeat

For the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the home opener brought familiar offensive frustrations following a season-opening 1-0 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers. Sebastian Aho broke the team’s scoreless drought late in the second period with a power-play goal, and Logan Stankoven added a third-period tally by tipping in a point shot from K’Andre Miller.

Despite outshooting Washington 33-27 and outhitting them 32-19, the Hurricanes could not overcome their defensive miscues and a tough night in net.

Coach Rod Brind’Amour noted that the roster needs more consistent contributions up and down the lineup as the team prepares to visit Philadelphia on Saturday night, while Washington immediately travels to face the Tampa Bay Lightning.
