Bria Hartley is set to return to professional basketball, signing with Villeneuve-d’Ascq as a medical replacement for Emmanuelle Tahane. The 34-year-old French-American guard has not played a competitive match since August 2025, when she last appeared for the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA. Her arrival in the Boulangère Wonderligue marks the first time the veteran will play for a French club, despite her long-standing history with the national team.
The signing provides a necessary boost for the Nord-based club, which has struggled through a difficult start to the season with only one victory in its first four league games. The team’s roster depth has been further tested by an active injury list, necessitating the recruitment of an experienced playmaker to stabilize the squad.
A Veteran Career of High-Level Competition
Hartley arrives in Villeneuve-d’Ascq with a resume spanning over a decade of professional basketball. A product of the University of Connecticut, she spent 11 seasons in the WNBA, playing for Washington, New York, Phoenix, Indiana, and Connecticut. Her European experience is equally extensive, featuring stints with EuroLeague Women clubs including Sopron, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Avenida Salamanca.
Her tenure with the French national team includes 17 selections and a silver medal at the 2019 EuroBasket. Despite this international pedigree, her career has been frequently interrupted by significant knee injuries, including surgeries for torn ACLs in 2020 and 2022, followed by a meniscus tear in September 2025. Her most recent stint with the Connecticut Sun saw her play under Rachid Meziane, a coach well-known to the Villeneuve-d’Ascq organization.
Maxime Bézin’s Strategy for the Season
Villeneuve-d’Ascq head coach Maxime Bézin expressed that the addition of Hartley is intended to help the team remain competitive while managing their current personnel shortages. The club confirmed she is filling the spot left by Emmanuelle Tahane, whose absence for a personal milestone was anticipated during the summer recruitment phase.
“The absences we are facing at the start of this season have led us to look for solutions to remain competitive, without losing sight of the collective progression process we are committed to,” Bézin said in a club statement. “Bria’s arrival fits perfectly into this desire. Her high-level experience, her reading of the game, and her ability to adapt quickly will be valuable assets for our team.”
Immediate Challenges in the EuroCup
The integration of Hartley into the roster comes at a critical juncture for the “Guerrières.” Beyond the need to climb the standings in the Boulangère Wonderligue, the club is preparing for its European campaign in the EuroCup Women. The team is scheduled to face the Czech side DSK Basketball Brandys on Wednesday, October 14.
The club’s management expects Hartley to assist in stabilizing the team’s performance during this period of transition. Following the match against DSK Basketball Brandys, Villeneuve-d’Ascq will continue its domestic schedule as it looks to improve upon its current win-loss record.
