Bologna signs veteran defender Matteo Darmian

Matteo Darmian has signed a contract with Bologna until June 30, 2027, maintaining the Serie A tradition of featuring at least one player from Italy’s 2014 World Cup squad. The 36-year-old defender joins the club as a free agent after six seasons with Inter Milan, following a career that included a Serie A and Coppa Italia double last term.

Darmian arrives to cover for Emil Holm, who suffered a hamstring tendon injury while on international duty with Sweden and faces a four-to-six-month recovery period following surgery.

Bologna Secures Free Agent on Trial

Bologna moved for Darmian after Holm underwent surgery to suture the tendon in his right hamstring. The club tested the veteran defender in training before offering a contract worth approximately 800,000 euros net per season, running through June 30, 2027. Head coach Raffaele Palladino gains a versatile defensive option who can operate as a wing-back in a three-man defensive system or as a right-sided center-back.

Darmian enters the squad ahead of Sunday’s fixture against Lecce at the Stadio Via del Mare, scheduled for 3 PM local time (13:00 UTC). While available for selection, he is expected to begin the match on the bench after playing his last competitive fixture in late May.

Squad Adjustments and Injury Concerns at Casteldebole

Palladino welcomed back his international contingent this week, reintegrating players such as Lewis Ferguson, Emil Holm’s fellow Scandinavians, and other returning squad members ahead of the weekend trip to Puglia. However, alongside Holm, Bologna remains without Jens Odgaard, who sustained a muscular lesion during the international break.

Tactical preparations point toward a 3-4-3 formation. Riccardo Orsolini and either Nicolò Cambiaghi or Federico Bernardeschi are positioned to support striker Santiago Piccoli in attack. In central midfield, Nikola Moro and Tommaso Pobega compete for a starting spot alongside Ferguson, with Nadir Zortea and Juan Miranda manning the flanks. In defense, Łukasz Skorupski retains his place in goal despite recent errors against Atalanta and Torino, supported by a defensive line likely featuring Jhon Lucumí or other central options alongside veterans.

The 2014 World Cup Legacy in Serie A

Darmian’s registration preserves a notable historical footnote in Italian football: the continuous presence in Serie A of players who featured in Cesare Prandelli’s starting lineup during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Darmian started on the right flank during Italy’s group-stage match against Uruguay on June 24, 2014, in Natal.

With Ciro Immobile having retired from professional play and Gianluigi Perin moving to Serie B side Palermo, Darmian stands as the last active representative of that specific Azzurri generation still competing in Italy’s top flight. His presence bridges a twelve-year gap between Italy’s last appearance in the tournament’s knockout stages and the current domestic season.
