Benin has climbed to 17th in the world rankings for men’s triples AirBadminton following a standout performance at the 2026 African Championships in Entebbe, Uganda. The continental campaign not only secured five total medals for the West African nation but also locked in a qualification spot for the upcoming BWF World Championships, shifting the spotlight onto the country’s growing stature in outdoor racquet sports.
Benin Secures Five Medals at Aero Beach
The continental tournament, staged from September 16 to 19, 2026, at Aero Beach in Entebbe, saw the Benin delegation capture five medals across multiple disciplines. The haul included one gold, three silver, and one bronze medal. The men’s triples team claimed the gold and the continental title by defeating Mauritius 3-0 in the final. That championship-winning lineup featured Oswald Fano-Dosh, Carlos Kpanou, Julien Totin, and Preferet Adomahou.
In addition to the triples gold, Benin added silverware in the men’s and women’s doubles events. Oswald Fano-Dosh and Carlos Kpanou earned silver in men’s doubles after dropping a tight 2-3 final against Egypt. On the women’s side, Flora Kpogbemabou and Anna Gladys Akakpo also secured silver, falling 2-3 to Burkina Faso in their final. Fano-Dosh and Akakpo rounded out their podium finishes by taking bronze in the mixed doubles competition.

World Rankings Shift Following Uganda Campaign
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings now reflect Benin’s steady ascent on the international stage. In the men’s triples category, the Benin squad sits at 17th in the world, making them the second-highest-ranked nation in Africa. Meanwhile, the women’s selection occupies the 66th global position. These figures cement the nation’s place inside the world’s top 20 for the men’s discipline following their medals in Uganda.
The West African team lived up to that status during the relay event, overcoming Mauritius 60-52 to reach the final. In the battle for the continental team crown, the squad known locally as the Guépards pushed Egypt to the limit before falling 60-57 in a contest that remained undecided until the final points.
World Championship Qualification Changes the Horizon
Beyond regional podium finishes, the team relay performance in Entebbe earned Benin direct qualification for the 2026 BWF AirBadminton World Championships.
AirBadminton, designed as an outdoor variant of traditional badminton playable on sand, grass, or hard surfaces, offers a practical alternative in regions where indoor court infrastructure remains limited. The sport’s emphasis on speed, spatial awareness, and collective strategy has allowed nations with modest indoor resources to compete at a high level. For urban centers like Cotonou and Porto-Novo, the national team’s breakthrough offers young athletes a new pathway into competitive racquet sports away from the dominance of association football.
