Belinda Bencic is fighting to protect her position inside the WTA top 20 during the ongoing Asian swing, entering the decisive stretch of her season following a difficult run of results since mid-August, srf.ch reported. The 29-year-old Swiss player currently sits 12th in the official world rankings but holds the 17th spot in the year-to-date race as she prepares for the upcoming WTA-1000 tournament in Wuhan.
First Round Exit in Beijing Underscores Recent Struggles
The Asian tour has not gone to plan for Bencic. At the WTA-1000 event in Beijing, she opened with a straight-sets victory against world number 103 Anastasia Zakharova, but her run ended immediately in the round of 32 against 31st-ranked American Ann Li. That early departure compounded a difficult sequence that began when hip problems forced her to retire during the quarterfinals of the WTA-1000 tournament in Toronto in mid-August. Since that physical setback, Bencic has secured only a single tour-level match victory, suffering early exits at both Cincinnati and the US Open.

Comparing 2026 Results to Her Strong 2025 Comeback Season
While the extent to which physical ailments have caused her current dip in form remains difficult to assess, the 2021 Olympic champion has not matched the high-water marks of her successful comeback season following maternity leave. During 2025, Bencic captured two WTA-500 titles and reached her second career Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon. By contrast, the 2026 season has yielded no semifinal appearances. She reached the round of 16 at two major tournaments and advanced no further than the quarterfinals in any other singles event.
Defending Ranking Points Across Three Final Asian Tournaments
To secure her top-20 ranking by the end of the calendar year, Bencic needs a strong finish across three planned tournament appearances in Asia. After Wuhan, she is scheduled to compete at the WTA-500 events in Ningbo and Tokyo. In total, the 10-time tour titlist must defend 728 ranking points earned during last year’s Asian swing, the bulk of which come from her title run at the 2025 Tokyo tournament.

Wuhan Second-Round Match Against Sonay Kartal
Following a first-round bye in Wuhan, Bencic will face 24-year-old British player Sonay Kartal, who is ranked 170th in the world. The two competitors have never faced each other on the professional tour. The outcome of this encounter and subsequent matches in Ningbo and Tokio will determine whether Bencic can stabilize her ranking ahead of the 2027 season.
