On Oct. 19, 1986, Grohe BBC Grosseto clinched the first Italian baseball championship in club history by defeating the Pirati di Rimini 7-2 in a decisive Game 7, capping a season led by manager Vic Luciani.
That 18:36 finish secured a 4-3 series victory for the side, sparking mass celebrations that stretched from the field back through the countryside. Four decades later, municipal leaders, former players, and local sports organizations are preparing official tributes to mark the anniversary of a milestone that cemented Grosseto as a point of reference for Italian baseball.
The Road to Game 7 and a Hard-Fought Series
BBC Grosseto entered the 1986 postseason after topping their regular-season group, moving past Milano 3-1 in the quarterfinals and eliminating Nettuno 4-2 in the semifinals. That set up a tense, back-and-forth final series against the Trevi.
Grosseto took the opening two games by scores of 4-0 and 11-10 before Rimini answered with a 3-0 shutout and a 12-2 rout to level the series. After Grosseto claimed an 11-2 victory in Game 5, Rimini forced a decisive seventh game by winning 2-1 in a grueling 13-inning battle. In Game 7, the club secured the 7-2 win needed to claim the title.
Recalling the grueling schedule, pitcher Alessandro Cappuccini noted the mental and physical resilience required to reset after tight losses during the marathon series, pointing to the squad’s readiness to seize the title when the final opportunity arrived.
Celebrations on the Road Back to Piazza Volturno
The return trip to Grosseto on that October evening turned into an impromptu victory parade. Players were midway through dinner in Sant’Angelo in Colle when telephone calls urged them back because the city was in an uproar.
As the team bus rolled past Paganico, supporters flooded the roadway to escort the champions at a walking pace all the way to Piazza Volturno. Local business owners opened their doors and cellars well into the night to host the players and fans.
For players on the field, the audio broadcast by Tiziano Pacifici on Radio Grifo captured the emotional weight of the final out. Cappuccini recalled listening to the recording years later, noting the broadcaster’s tear-broken voice during the closing moments of the game.
Civic Commemoration Planned in Grosseto
Local authorities are organizing formal events to honor the 1986 roster and preserve the history for younger generations. Grosseto Antonfrancesco Vivarelli Colonna described the 1986 scudetto as the defining symbol of a community sharing the sacrifices and passions of its athletes.
The municipal administration has scheduled a public commemorative gathering for Oct. 30 at 17:00 local time in the town hall’s council chamber. The event will feature period film footage, photographs, sports memorabilia, and direct testimony from members of the championship team.
