FC Bayern Munich maintains a close and unofficial partnership with Austrian Bundesliga club TSV Hartberg, utilizing informal ties and targeted loan moves to develop young prospects outside its formal Red&Gold network, according to club executives.
Informal Ties Drive Development in Austria
While Bayern Munich operates an official multi-club structure via the Red&Gold network, the German giants also rely on unwritten alliances to place developing talents in competitive environments. Speaking to SPOX, Bayern youth director Jochen Sauer highlighted that the club maintains close relationships with specific clubs that operate outside their formal corporate umbrella. Sauer pointed to TSV Hartberg in Austria and Portugal’s FC Arouca as prime examples of destinations where young players have been sent to gain valuable senior experience and accelerate their professional development.
Christoph Freund Leverages Austrian League for Talent
The Austrian domestic competition holds significant strategic value for Munich’s talent evaluators. Sporting director Christoph Freund noted in March 2025 that the Austrian league consistently produces intriguing young talent, praising the overall playing standard as ideal for nurturing raw potential. These institutional ties are mirrored in direct personnel exchanges. Magnus Dalpiaz, a 19-year-old prospect, is currently on loan at Hartberg from Munich. Simon Freund—son of the Bayern sporting director—secured his first professional contract with the Austrian side during the summer transfer window.
Future Expansion Through Wacker Innsbruck and LAFC
Munich’s footprint in Austrian football could soon expand through indirect partnership channels. Wacker Innsbruck, a club aiming for a long-term return to the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, shares a club network connection with LAFC, which maintains formal ties with Bayern Munich. This intersecting web of club associations allows Bayern to monitor and influence player development pathways across multiple tiers of European and international football without requiring direct ownership stakes in every collaborating team.
