Baskonia Targets NBA Center Christian Koloko for Roster Boost

Christian Koloko Emerges as Baskonia’s Primary Frontcourt Target

Baskonia has identified center Christian Koloko as its principal transfer market target as the club seeks to bolster its frontcourt rotation. The Spanish outlet AS reported the development on October 13, noting that the 26-year-old Cameroonian big man has drawn heavy interest from the Vitoria-based EuroLeague side despite prior offseason additions in the paint.

Koloko brings 122 games of NBA experience to the European market. Standing 2.16 meters tall, the former Arizona standout was selected in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors before subsequent stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Atlanta Hawks. Scouts note his elite wingspan, shot-blocking capability, and vertical presence above the rim, though evaluators point out that his offensive output remains heavily reliant on playmakers.

Roster Reorganization and Potential Financial Moves

Pursuing a high-profile rim protector requires financial and structural maneuvering within the Baskonia squad. The club previously added Kenneth Faried and Marcio Santos to the frontcourt following the departures of Mamadi Diakité and Khalifa Diop. To clear sufficient salary cap space for Koloko, the sporting management has explored a potential transfer for American guard Markus Howard.

At the same time, the club’s frontcourt adjustments have placed French forward Clément Frisch under scrutiny. BeBasket reported on September 22 that Baskonia intended to reinforce its interior game, putting the 24-year-old former Nancy player directly in line for a possible loan departure. Three weeks later, no loan has been officially confirmed, and no destination has been announced for the 2.01-meter forward, leaving his immediate future in Vitoria uncertain as the club pursues its new targets.

European Competition for the Cameroonian Center

Securing Koloko’s signature remains a complex task for Baskonia. Multiple continental outfits are monitoring the center’s availability, with Panathinaikos joining Baskonia and two other unnamed EuroLeague clubs in pursuit of the former NBA player. While Koloko recently competed for the Cameroon national team during FIBA windows, his next career step depends on finalizing terms amid fierce competition across the continent.

As negotiations continue, the ultimate arrival of the 2.16-meter pivot is expected to trigger further roster cuts or loan decisions, with Frisch remaining the most immediately affected squad member should the Spanish club finalize its high-priority frontcourt acquisition.
