Barletta Shines as Sport Beat Criciúma 2-1 to Climb Série B Table

Chrystian Barletta converted a 54th-minute penalty kick in stoppage time to lift Sport Club do Recife to a 2–1 victory against Criciúma on Friday night at Ilha do Retiro in the 35th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B.

Barletta breaks deadlock after tight opening

Playing before a home crowd at Ilha do Retiro in Recife, Sport and Criciúma traded possession through a scoreless opening half hour. The breakthrough arrived when Barletta collected the ball outside the penalty area and fired a long-range shot past the defense to open the scoring for the hosts. O Criciúma levou um gol no último lance e perdeu para o Sport por 2 a 1 após um erro de Marcelo Hermes no momento de afastar a bola que permitiu a Barletta marcar. After 30 minutes of balance on the pitch, Barletta broke into the final third of the second half with a long-range shot to open the scoring.

Late drama alters the standings

Criciúma pressed for an equalizer throughout the second half, bringing on substitutes to increase attacking pressure. After Sport opened the scoring on a fast counterattack featuring individual brilliance from Barletta, the Tigre made tactical changes and got back into the game with the introduction of Gui Lobo and Romarinho reinforcing the attack. The visitors broke through in the 46th minute when Waguininho headed a cross toward Felipe Mateus, who finished with a volley to level the score at 1–1. Romarinho still had the chance to turn the match around immediately afterwards, but was stopped by the defense. As the match stretched into stoppage time, Sport earned a penalty kick when Willian Oliveira was brought down inside the area at 52 minutes and the referee pointed to the spot.

Tactical adjustments from the touchline

Criciúma manager Umberto Louzer explained after the match that his tactical setup aimed to stifle Sport’s flanks. “The line of five, with three original center-backs, was very much in function of the opponent who usually puts four or five players in the attack, to neutralize the depth play of the opponent and the fluctuation of Barletta, who was coming from the outside in,” Louzer said in post-match remarks covered by 4oito.

Louzer added that his side created more opportunities and held superior offensive volume, but failed to capitalize on key chances in the final third. “What we lacked was efficacy to take advantage of the volume we had, to leave here with a different result,” Louzer noted.

Sport levels with Atlético-GO in playoff battle

With the victory, Sport reaches 54 points, drawing level with Atlético-GO in the battle for playoff position while holding a goal difference of nine compared to 10. Criciúma remains in fifth place with 59 points, missing an opportunity to close the gap on the automatic promotion places in the second division, maintaining a three-point distance to leader Vila Nova, which still plays in this round.

Sport returns to training on Saturday morning at the CT José de Andrade Médicis to begin preparations for its next fixture. The team travels to face Botafogo-SP at Arena Nicnet in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, scheduled for 16:00 local time on Saturday, October 31. Criciúma returns home to host Ponte Preta at the Estádio Heriberto Hülse on Friday, October 30, at 19:30.
