Baie d’Armor Judo operates community dojo in Saint-Brieuc

Baie d’Armor Judo operates a community-focused dojo in Saint-Brieuc where monthly membership costs 10 euros, offering an alternative model for martial arts access in the Côtes-d’Armor department, according to regional reports. Founded in 2021 by club president Bruno Kitchekerekian, Sébastien Mocaer, and lead instructor Mickaël Lajoux, the organization originally lacked a permanent facility and held classes across various municipal gymnasiums around the local area.

Establishing the Dojo Solidaire in Saint-Brieuc

The club secured its current permanent space at 13, rue Xavier Grall through the “1 000 dojos – Héritage de Paris 2024” initiative led by France Judo. Local housing provider Terres d’Armor Habitat supplied the venue rent-free under a five-year agreement. Under the arrangement, the club covers operational expenses including electricity, water, insurance, coaching salaries, and travel costs.

Financial backing for the establishment of the facility came primarily from national and municipal sources. France Judo funded 80 percent of the construction work, while the remaining 20 percent was split between the municipal government of Saint-Brieuc and the club itself. Lajoux noted that the organization still carries a balance of 20,000 euros in remaining construction costs. Additional financial support includes a municipal subsidy from Saint-Brieuc alongside private sponsorship from insurance firm Groupama.

Program Offerings for Members Aged 6 to 80

The facility currently serves 70 active members ranging in age from 6 to 80 years old. The roster includes both traditional judoka and practitioners of taïso, a conditioning gymnastics discipline originating in Japan focused on muscular strengthening and physical maintenance without throws or sparring.

Certain taïso practitioners also take part in specialized fall-prevention workshops aimed at adults over the age of 60. Funding for this preventative initiative is provided by the Conférence des Financeurs de la prévention de la perte d’autonomie des personnes âgées des Côtes-d’Armor. Beyond standard classes, the club hosts bi-weekly workshops for members divided into two seasonal blocks running from October to March and March to July.

Managing Space Constraints and Future Scheduling

Despite the success of the 10-euro monthly membership model, club leadership reports mounting pressure on available mat space. Lajoux stated that the growing membership has outstripped the capacity of the current room, prompting discussions with municipal authorities about securing training slots in priority neighborhoods as well as inside the new municipal dojo currently under construction in the Villages district. Meanwhile, the local university’s valley dojo remains fully allocated to student groups and neighborhood associations.

Lajoux emphasized that the organization maintains professional standards despite its low fees, employing certified instructors rather than operating as a childcare service. The primary objective remains education through the core values of judo, though the current economic framework limits the club’s capacity to expand training schedules further without additional venue access.
