Badminton Shuttlecock Prices Drop Across China

Badminton enthusiasts across China are experiencing a sudden shift in the retail market, reporting price drops of 10% to 20% on equipment as mid-range and budget shuttlecocks flood offline and online storefronts. Retailers and manufacturers attribute the correction to an aggressive inventory dump following years of rapid price escalation driven by speculative hoarding across the supply chain.

Recent retail checks in Hangzhou revealed that standard tubes of 12 shuttlecocks have fallen by 10 to 30 Chinese yuan compared to pricing late last year. At the Gongjin Badminton Court, recreational player Cai noted that his preferred Yonex AS-05 model dropped from upwards of 200 yuan per tube before China’s National Day holiday to roughly 130 yuan. Staff at sporting goods outlets inside local venues confirmed that overall inventory pricing has eased by about 10%, with high-demand duck-feather entry models selling between 155 and 185 yuan a tube.

Independent shopkeepers near regional residential zones pointed to similar corrections. A retail manager near the Daguan Dongsiwei complex reported that Essaes shuttlecocks dropped from 120 yuan to 110 yuan, while Victor tournament-grade duck-feather tubes fell from 158 yuan to 140 yuan. High-end Yonex AEROSENSA goose-feather tubes, which retailed above 300 yuan during the winter of 2022, now sit on shelves at 200 to 220 yuan. Chain retailers like Decathlon have similarly adjusted price tags downward by roughly 10% on select lines, while preserving baseline pricing on elite international tournament editions.

Online marketplaces reflect the broader correction. On platforms like Dewu, historical price tracking shows mid-to-high-end Yonex advanced goose-feather tubes sliding from peak transaction points above 380 yuan down to approximately 290 yuan. Shoppers tracking upcoming retail events like Singles’ Day have posted discounts bringing brand options such as Chaopai down below 87 yuan per tube, well below historical lows near 147 yuan.

Factory Supply Adjustments and Downstream Liquidations

Wu Bin, chairman of Zhejiang-based Jiangshan Sanxin Sports Goods Co.—a core manufacturer operating within China’s primary production base for 27 years—stated that factory supply prices have dropped 20% to 30% this year, hitting budget and mid-tier products hardest while luxury options held steadier margins.

According to Wu, the price slump stems from a wave of panic liquidation triggered by unsustainable market inflation. During the post-pandemic recovery, stakeholders throughout the supply chain—spanning abattoirs, raw feather merchants, processing plants, distributors, and individual clubs—accumulated massive inventories under the assumption of perpetual growth. This artificial scarcity pushed retail costs beyond consumer tolerance, stalling transactions and forcing a sudden release of stored stock.

While synthetic shuttlecocks have made minor inroads into recreational play, Wu noted that consumer preference remains overwhelmingly tied to natural feathers, making synthetic alternatives a minimal driver of the current correction. Looking ahead, Wu indicated that depressed pork prices have squeezed goose and duck farming yields, keeping raw feather supplies tight and leaving little room for further factory-level price drops.
