Atlético Nacional Fans in 1,000 Municipalities, says Edwin Avendaño

Atlético Nacional holds a documented fan presence across 1,000 of Colombia’s 1,103 municipalities, according to a geographic data analysis conducted by specialist Edwin Avendaño and cited by El Colombiano. The mapping initiative outlines the national footprint of the Medellín-based club, quantifying direct-link supporters across the Andean region, the Caribbean, and remote Amazonian departments.

Mapping the Green and White Footprint Across Colombian Municipalities

Quantifying a football club’s true fanbase presents persistent challenges, but data specialist Edwin Avendaño undertook a municipal breakdown of Atlético Nacional supporters inside Colombia. El Colombiano reported that the mapping project relied on two primary club-controlled datasets: the official subscriber rolls for season ticket holders and purchase registries from official club merchandise outlets, known as Tiendas Verdes.

This methodology captured a total of 636,818 directly identified individuals. Avendaño described the resulting dataset as intentionally restricted, accounting exclusively for supporters maintaining a direct commercial or administrative connection to the club through season tickets or merchandise purchases. Despite omitting millions of casual fans without active memberships, the database establishes a verifiable geographic distribution baseline across 1,000 municipalities nationwide.

Contrasting Direct Registries With National Poll Estimates

While the internal registry accounts for nearly 640,000 verified buyers and subscribers, broader demographic surveys place Atlético Nacional’s total supporter base far higher. A 2025 research study conducted by Napoleón Franco for RCN alongside Invamer calculated that the club commands between 8 million and 11 million aficionados overall, factoring in both domestic residents and large Colombian expatriate communities abroad, notably in the United States.

Putting these figures side by side highlights the gap between active club-registered participants and the broader sympathetic public. The 636,818 individuals tracked in Avendaño’s municipal map represent roughly six to eight percent of the lower end of the 8-million-person estimate from the Invamer and Napoleón Franco polling data.

Concentration Centers and Regional Outliers in the Data

Geographic analysis of the registered fan registry reveals heavy concentrations throughout the Andean region and portions of the Colombian Caribbean. Bogotá leads all municipalities outside Antioquia with 37,957 registered club supporters, according to the data reported by El Colombiano.

Within the Aburrá Valley surrounding Medellín, Bello ranks second overall with 28,396 registered fans, followed by Itagüí with 17,890 and Envigado with 16,179. The top ten list of municipalities is rounded out by Rionegro, La Estrella, Copacabana, and Caldas in Antioquia.

Beyond the traditional Andean heartland, the interactive mapping project identified thermal heat points and active supporter presence in distant and sparsely populated departments. Registrations extended into Vaupés, Putumayo, and deep into the Amazon department, demonstrating active commercial and subscriber engagement in remote corners of the country.
