Argentina 7-0 Burkina Faso as senior squad boycott forces U23 deployment

Stranded Seniors Force U23 Emergency Deployment

A delayed charter flight left Burkina Faso’s senior squad stranded in Casablanca, Morocco, in October 2026. When connections narrowed the arrival window to just three and a half hours before kickoff, the vast majority of the senior roster refused further travel.

Welt.de reported that the travel disruption prompted the African nation’s senior squad to boycott the Buenos Aires Sunday fixture. With senior players declining to board subsequent connections, the Burkina Faso football federation scrambled to deploy its under-23 team to South America.

The resulting contest proved heavily lopsided against the visiting youth players, who entered the match ranked 62nd in the FIFA world rankings. Lautaro Martínez opened the scoring in the fourth minute, followed quickly by an own goal from Moumoune Diallo in the eighth minute.

Further strikes from Gianluca Prestianni in the 12th minute, Nico Paz in the 35th, and Julián Álvarez in the 36th wrapped up a 5–0 halftime lead for the reigning world champions. Franco Mastantuono added a sixth goal in the 57th minute before Giuliano Simeone sealed the 7–0 scoreline in stoppage time.

Scaloni Praises Opponents Amid International Censure

Despite the mismatch, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni praised the members of the traveling contingent who chose to play. Scaloni stated after the final whistle that the visitors honoured the sport by fulfilling the fixture under difficult circumstances, adding that the Albiceleste treated the match like a final out of respect for the ticket-buying public and their opponents.

The Spanish newspaper AS labelled the episode a historic farce and an absolute shame, according to Welt.de. The Argentine publication Clarin similarly characterized the fixture as a complete failure due to the lack of competitive balance.

Fragility of International Friendlies Exposed

The match served as a preliminary warm-up for Lionel Scaloni’s squad ahead of a fixture against Benin scheduled for the following midweek. That upcoming fixture against Benin carries additional significance as the expected final international appearance for 38-year-old Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who did not feature in the matchday squad against Burkina Faso.
