Alexander Zverev set to finish year as world number one, says Puntodebreak

Alexander Zverev is set to finish the year as the world number one after Jannik Sinner announced he will not play again due to physical issues, Puntodebreak reported. Sinner currently leads the ATP rankings with 11,000 points, while Zverev sits second with 9,720 points.

Zverev could overtake Sinner as rankings points shift

The Italian player holds a significant lead in the rankings but faces a heavy loss of points before the calendar year concludes. Sinner will lose 3,000 points from being unable to defend his titles in Vienna, Paris, and the ATP Finals, which will lower his total to 8,000 points by the end of the season.

Zverev defends just 930 points across those same late-season events. If he did not win another match for the rest of the year, he would finish with 8,700 points, which is higher than Sinner’s projected total.

Climbing the rankings in Beijing and Shanghai

Zverev entered the autumn swing with momentum after capturing titles at Roland Garros and the US Open earlier this year.

Reflecting on his position in the race, Zverev told reporters earlier in the autumn, At the beginning of the season, everyone thought that battle would be between Carlos and Jannik, so I’m very glad to be in that conversation. Of course, it’s something I have in mind. As I said many times this year, the only thing I can control is performing well on the court and doing my best to prepare to play good tennis.

Historical context and the battle for the top

He would also stand as the third different player to occupy the top spot during the current season, a feat that has not occurred since 2022 when Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Carlos Alcaraz traded the leadership role.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz holds 5,390 ranking points, keeping him distant from Sinner’s leading mark of 11,000 points. However, strong performances through the remainder of the autumn schedule could allow the Spanish player to close the gap while his main rivals deal with injuries and tournament absences.

Year-end honors in Turin

Beyond the regular ATP rankings, Zverev has also guaranteed himself the number one position in the Race to Turin. He will receive the year-end number one trophy during the ATP Finals, which take place in Italy as the final major event of the professional tennis calendar.

Zverev's rise is a dramatic change from January, when he sat third in the standings behind Alcaraz and Sinner. With Sinner sidelined for the coming months and the German holding a light defensive load through October and November, the transition to the top of men’s tennis appears mathematically inevitable barring unexpected results.
