Alexander Zverev enters the new week with more than 10,000 ranking points for the first time in his career, reaching a milestone achieved by only seven other players since the ATP’s 2009 points reform. Following his semifinal run at the Shanghai Masters, the German player guarantees himself at least 10,070 points in the updated ATP rankings released on Monday.
Reaching an Elite Group in the Rankings
Zverev’s latest milestone places him alongside an exclusive group of players who have crossed the 10,000-point threshold over the last decade and a half. According to data reported by RP Online, only Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Daniil Medwedew have reached this tier since the current distribution system was established.
Depending on his performance through the remainder of the tournament in Shanghai, that figure could climb further. A victory in his semifinal match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina adds 250 points, while a tournament title would bring his total to 10,670 points, as detailed in reports from the region.
Closing the Gap on Jannik Sinner
With world number one Jannik Sinner sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, Zverev narrows the gap at the top of the men’s game. Frankfurter Rundschau notes that Zverev faces minimal points-defending pressure through the autumn and into the upcoming spring, creating a mathematical pathway for the German to extend his stay at the summit beyond the historic twelve-week tenure managed by Boris Becker in 1991.
Sinner finishes his campaign with roughly 7,950 points, leaving compatriot Carlos Alcaraz and other chasers with considerable ground to make up during the indoor swing and the early-season hardcourt events.
Addressing the Ball-Bounce Controversy
Alongside his on-court ascent, Zverev addressed a growing talking point regarding his service routine.

“I don’t know why. I am very much aware of it and trying to work on it. “If I am doing something that my opponents find distracting, I don’t want to do it. I want to win with tennis—that is my goal.”
What Lies Ahead in Shanghai
Zverev returns to the court on Saturday at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 event, broadcast via Sky. A victory secures his place in Sunday’s final as he pursues the eighth Masters title of his career.
