Alejandro Davidovich Reaches Shanghai Masters Semifinals After Arthur Gea’s Injury Retirement

Alejandro Davidovich has advanced to the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters 1000 after his opponent, Arthur Gea, retired from their quarterfinal match on Thursday. The match, which lasted only 19 minutes, concluded with Davidovich leading 4-1 in the first set before the French player withdrew due to an injury.

A Quick Path to the Semifinals

The match was cut short after Gea requested medical assistance during the fifth game. The French player had been struggling physically from the start of the match, losing his opening service game without winning a single point. Gea, who had previously defeated world number four Ben Shelton in the third round, was unable to continue despite attempting to save break points with consecutive aces in the second game.

This result marks the fourth time in his career that Davidovich has reached the semifinals of an ATP Masters 1000 event. The 27-year-old Spaniard previously reached this stage in Monte Carlo in 2022 and 2025, and in Canada in 2023. By reaching the final four in Shanghai, Davidovich becomes the first Spanish player to do so since Rafael Nadal in 2017.

An Ambition for the Davis Cup

Following his advancement, Davidovich used the tournament’s signature camera-signing tradition to send a message. After previously writing “Estoy, eh” in an earlier round, he wrote “Esperando” on the lens on Thursday. This message is widely interpreted as a signal to David Ferrer of the Spanish Davis Cup team, regarding his availability for the “Final 8” scheduled to take place in Bologna, Italy, from November 24 to 29.

The Road Ahead in Shanghai

Davidovich now awaits his opponent for the semifinal match, which will be determined by the outcome of the quarterfinal clash between world number one Alexander Zverev and Australian Alex de Miñaur. This year’s performance represents a significant improvement for the Málaga native, who exited the Shanghai tournament in the third round last year after a loss to Daniil Medvedev.

The Spanish presence in the tournament could increase on Friday, as Rafael Jódar is set to face Norwegian Casper Ruud in his own quarterfinal match. Jódar, competing in his debut season on the professional circuit, is aiming to reach the semifinals while also contending for a spot in the season-ending ATP Finals. Both Davidovich and Jódar remain the only Spanish players left in the draw. Despite the success of previous Spanish legends like Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, and Roberto Bautista, no Spanish player has ever won the Shanghai Masters in the singles category since the tournament’s inception in 2009.

Tournament Context and Historical Standing

While Davidovich has reached a Masters 1000 final once before—falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo—the Shanghai event remains an elusive title for the nation. Nadal reached the final in 2009 and 2017, Ferrer in 2011, and Bautista in 2016, but each finished as the runner-up. Davidovich’s current form places him in a position to challenge that historical trend as the tournament reaches its final stages.
