Alberto Herreros and Cristóbal Rodríguez Enter Spanish Basketball Pantheon

Alberto Herreros entered the Spanish Basketball Pantheon during the sixth induction ceremony held in La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz, joining a class of ten prominent figures that also celebrated fellow Real Madrid legend Cristóbal Rodríguez, as reported by Real Madrid.

How Herreros Shaped the Modern Era

Herreros arrived at Real Madrid in 1996 after transferring from Estudiantes, quickly establishing himself as a central pillar of the club through the late 1990s. Across nine seasons with the club, he secured two league titles and one European Cup Winners’ Cup. Madridistas remember his decisive three-pointer in the fifth game of the 2004–2005 final against TAU Cerámica, a shot that completed a series comeback and clinched the domestic title. Following his retirement in 2005, Herreros transitioned into the club’s basketball technical staff.

At the international level, Herreros earned 172 caps for the Spanish senior national team. He claimed silver medals at both the 1999 and 2003 European Championships. In the domestic top flight, he holds the all-time Liga Endesa records with 9,759 points and 1,233 successful three-point field goals.

The Legacy of Cristóbal Rodríguez

Rodríguez joined Real Madrid at just 16 years old from Tenerife, stepping into the senior squad under Pedro Ferrándiz in 1966. Operating as a pivot during one of the most decorated periods in club history, Rodríguez spent 13 seasons in Madrid. His tenure yielded a trophy haul, including four European Cups, eleven league championships, eight Spanish Cups, and three Intercontinental Cups.

Posthumous Tributes and Pantheon Honors

The sixth ceremony also dedicated time to honor other figures from the club’s history. Organizers paid a posthumous tribute to Piculín Ortiz, who played for Real Madrid during the 1989–1990 season and passed away on May 5 at the age of 62. Mario Pesquera, who served as the general manager of the club’s basketball section for the 1994–1995 campaign, received recognition during the same event in Cádiz.
