Adrie Koster is taking charge of the Schouws elftal, returning to the coaching touchline at 71 years old, Voetbalkrant.com reported. The former Club Brugge and Ajax manager steps into the dugout for the regional amateur selection based in Schouwen-Duiveland, which serves as a traditional sparring partner for professional Dutch clubs ahead of their new campaigns.
Roots on Schouwen-Duiveland and a 50-Year Circle
For Koster, the appointment carries a deep historical and personal resonance. Born in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, the veteran manager’s new role bridges a half-century gap since his own breakthrough as a player. That 1977 appearance in the regional team famously propelled him toward a professional career that featured more than 100 top-flight matches and three international caps for the Netherlands national team, as detailed by Voetbal International.
“Daar liggen mijn roots natuurlijk. Er woont ook nog wat familie van mij en ik kom er nog regelmatig,” Koster told regional broadcaster Omroep Zeeland, explaining his ties to the area. He admitted that the job initially began as a lighthearted joke when the organization searched for a successor, but the discussion quickly turned serious. “Je hebt natuurlijk jarenlang ervaring in de voetballerij als trainer. Dan hoop je die spelers ook nog wat mee te geven waar ze misschien in de toekomst iets aan hebben. Dat is eigenlijk de drijfveer.”

Koster Brings Professional Pedigree to Amateur Side
Koster brings decades of professional pedigree to an amateur side established in 2023, which has previously squared off against professional outfits such as FC Volendam, FC Groningen, NEC, and FC Dordrecht.
In Belgium, Koster left a distinct tactical footprint when he took charge of Club Brugge in 2009. He immediately won over supporters by implementing an attacking, attractive brand of football that propelled the blue-and-black squad to a second-place league finish and a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. Although his tenure in Brugge ultimately concluded without major silverware, his emphasis on developing young talent and playing expansive football cemented his reputation across Belgian football.

Uncharted Territory in Zeeland
Despite his vast top-flight experience across the Netherlands and Belgium, Koster steps into his new role with a clean slate regarding his roster. Speaking to regional media, the 71-year-old manager confessed he has plenty to discover about his new squad. “Om heel eerlijk te zijn ken ik de spelers niet. Voor mij is het helemaal nieuw. Ik ben ook benieuwd wie er allemaal geselecteerd gaat worden voor dat elftal. Dus ik ben zelf ook nieuwsgierig,” Koster said.
While the exact opponents for the Schouws elftal summer preparation schedule remain unannounced, Koster is expected to make his debut on the amateur bench ahead of the upcoming professional pre-season calendar.
