Adam Nathan Lipschitz won the 103rd Kosice Peace Marathon in Slovakia on Sunday, finishing the 42,195-kilometer course in 2:07:21 and securing a 32-second victory over runner-up Abednego Cheruiyot. Lipschitz became the first South African runner to claim the title, breaking away from the leading group around the 32-kilometer mark and significantly improving his personal best.
Lipschitz Breaks Away From Elite Field in Warm Conditions
The elite men’s group maintained a rapid pace from the opening kilometers, guided by a trio of pacemakers who held an average of roughly three minutes per kilometer. Despite warm weather conditions, the lead runners maintained splits that ran up to 45 seconds faster than the previous year’s course record at the halfway turn.
Cheruiyot of Kenya finished second with a time of 2:07:51, while his compatriot Moses Kipngetich Kemei placed third in 2:08:03. Kemei remains the holder of the course record set during the previous year’s event. Lipschitz sustained his pace through the closing stages of the race, running strong split times before crossing the finish line ahead of the Kenyan contingent.
Je to fantastické. Pred šiestimi mesiacmi som povedal, že sa vrátim a že tu môžem dosiahnuť niečo veľké. Mám za sebou dobrú prípravu a v tejto sezóne sa mi darilo aj v pretekoch,
Lipschitz stated to STVR, reflecting on his victory.
Robi Fayes Dominates Women’s Race While Thousands Flock to Kosice
In the women’s division, Aberash Robi Fayes established a commanding lead early and maintained a pace that proved too demanding for her competitors. Fayes secured first place with a finishing time of 2:21:53, followed by Nurit Ahmed Samiro of Ethiopia in second at 2:25:02 and Tecla Jelimo Kibet of Kenya taking third in 2:29:55.
The 103rd edition of the International Peace Marathon drew more than 19,000 runners from 74 countries. Race director Branislav Koniar noted the event’s broad appeal in bridging elite competition with public participation. Organizers highlighted that female participants accounted for 37.4 percent of the total field, with 7,134 women registered across the various race programs.
Slovak Standouts Face Tough Conditions on the Course
Marek Hladík finished as the top Slovak runner in the main marathon event, recording a time near 2:25. Hladík, who won the Kosice marathon during its 2020 edition, fell short of his personal best of 2:22:14 after experiencing severe cramping in the latter stages of the race.
Hladík explained to reporters regarding his tactical approach and physical struggles on the sun-exposed course.
Jenčuš and Páleníková Claim National Half Marathon Honors
While the full marathon did not serve as the Slovak national championship race, the half marathon distance hosted national title competitions. Mountain biker Jakub Jenčuš secured the Slovak men’s half marathon title after finishing second overall in the half marathon standings behind Hungary’s Vitarius Ben, who clocked a winning time of 1:08:26.

Som veľmi prekvapený z toho, čo sa práve stalo. Ja som cyklista, reprezentujem SR v horskej cyklistike. Behu sa venujem iba rok. Tibora poznám dlhé roky a je to môj veľký vzor,
Jenčuš said after the race, detailing his transition from competitive cycling to distance running.
Traffic Closures and Public Transit Realignments Shape Race Day
To accommodate the massive influx of participants and spectators across Kosice, municipal authorities implemented extensive street closures and public transportation detours on Sunday. Complete traffic restrictions affected key thoroughfares including Hlavna Street, Namestie Maratona mieru, and Watsonova Street, with police units regulating alternative routes for motorists from early morning until mid-afternoon.
Public transit operators adjusted tram and bus networks throughout the city. Tram lines 2 and 7 were suspended, while lines 1, 6, and 9 operated on modified shuttle routes via the Kosice amphitheater and regional court junctions to maintain transit connectivity around the closed race course.
