Aasgaard Could Move to Championship if Playing Time Doesn’t Increase, says Wyness

Thelo Aasgaard faces a potential return to the English Championship if Anderlecht fails to increase his playing time, according to warnings issued regarding his current loan spell in Belgium.

Thelo Aasgaard Struggles For Minutes At Anderlecht Following Rangers Loan

Thelo Aasgaard joined RSC Anderlecht from Rangers during the summer transfer window with clear expectations of regular first-team football, backed by a purchase option included in the loan agreement. However, the 24-year-old Norwegian international has played just 31 minutes in the league across two substitute appearances. His last domestic league appearance occurred on Sept. 19, when he played 13 minutes against Zulte Waregem. Outside of domestic competition, Aasgaard earned a single start in the UEFA Europa League against Lyon, logging 73 minutes on the pitch.

Rangers Monitor Investment Value As Keith Wyness Issues Warning

The lack of playing time in Brussels has drawn attention from Scotland, where Rangers retain a vested interest in the midfielder’s development. Rangers acquired Aasgaard for 3.5 million pounds in 2025 and intends to protect the financial investment. Keith Wyness, a former CEO of Aberdeen and current club advisor, stated that Rangers will not wait indefinitely for Anderlecht to integrate the player. Wyness told Football Insider that if Aasgaard fails to breakthrough in Belgium and the purchase option is left unexercised, a move back to English football represents a logical step.

“They will probably try to place him at a Championship club,” Wyness said regarding Rangers’ potential alternative plans. “There are clubs there in the middle and lower reaches who would want to sign him.” Wyness added that the English second tier could serve as a more productive showcase for the player.

Championship Precedent And Previous Performance In England

Aasgaard is already familiar with the competitive demands of the English Championship. Prior to his transfer to Rangers, he spent half a season at Luton Town, making 17 appearances and scoring two goals. Following that stint, Rangers brought him to Scotland, where he recorded seven league goals and four assists during the previous campaign. With Anderlecht holding a purchase option, the Belgian club must decide whether the midfielder can develop into a decisive squad member before the loan agreement expires at the end of the season.
