The Professional Darts Corporation will shift the upcoming World Darts Championship into the Main Hall of the Alexandra Palace in London, increasing per-session capacity above 5,000 spectators and generating an estimated 1.5 million pounds in additional ticket revenue for the tournament starting December 11.
When the 34th edition of the global championship opens, the tournament leaves its longtime home in the complex’s West Hall for the larger main arena, welt.de reported. The move brings immediate financial gains across the three-week event, adding roughly 70,000 total seats across the schedule alongside expanded returns in hospitality and fan village merchandise areas.
Financial Gains Meet Historic Venue Realities
For nearly two decades, the Alexandra Palace has served as the financial engine for professional darts. The December showcase generates the vast majority of revenue that the Professional Darts Corporation distributes across the tour between January and November. Without the scale of the winter festival, the organization could not sustain its tournament purses or multi-million-pound television contracts.

Short-term economics drove the expansion. Ticket prices begin at 55 pounds through a ballot system, and every session in the larger venue is expected to sell out. Yet the physical shift introduces questions regarding whether the unique celebratory atmosphere will dilute inside a substantially larger hall. Organizers spent years debating the relocation before committing to the bigger space.
Tournament Expansion Across the 2027 Calendar
The capacity increase at the World Championship follows a broader pattern of growth across the professional circuit. One year prior, the Professional Darts Corporation expanded the world championship field from 96 to 128 players and doubled the prize pool to five million pounds, awarding the champion one million pounds.
Additional global expansion arrived with the release of the 2027 tour schedule. CEO Matt Porter noted that the European Tour will visit France for the first time in March, staging events in Liévin with L’Equipe serving as media partner. Other calendar modifications include the European Open debut in Salzburg and an expanded European Championship in Dortmund, which grows from four days to six.
Luke Littler Favorites Title Amid Seating Challenges
While logistical questions surround the new seating configuration in London, sporting drama remains secondary among analysts. Luke Littler enters the tournament as the favorite to claim a third world title on January 3, following a rapid rise that transformed the sport’s global television audience.

The primary challenges facing organizers center on matching ticket distribution fairness with the expanded inventory, alongside preserving the distinct crowd culture that turned the Alexandra Palace into an international television staple.
